• This teaching resource explains the work of Professor Ian Paulsen and his team at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology, a research centre that spans nine universities across Australia. Researchers at the centre engineer microbes to do things that naturally occurring microbes do not do, opening up a virtually infinite array of possibilities that have the potential to save our environment and millions of lives.
• This resource also contains an interview with researchers from the centre. If you or your students have a question for them, you can submit it online – go to the article using the Futurum link below and scroll to the bottom of the page. The team will reply!
• The activity sheet provides ‘talking points’ (based on Bloom’s Taxonomy) to prompt students to reflect on the team’s research, and tasks them to create a presentation to secure funding for their own synthetic biology project.
