The Breadwinner Movie Guide | Questions | Worksheet (PG13 - 2017) helps students get the most out of this eye opening movie that follows a young Afghan girl, Parvana, as she struggles to help her family survive in Afghanistan in 2001. Challenge students to think critically about the freedoms they enjoy that people in Parvana’s country do not. Explore the historical context of the film in regard to the Soviet-Afghan war and Islamic Law under the Taliban.

Note: The bonus extension activity question on the last page requires additional research which may lead to discovering some unsettling punishments enacted by the Taliban. It is suitable for more mature students, OR, I advise printing out selective materials, such as the Wikipedia entry for ‘Taliban treatment of women’ with the ‘punishments’ section edited.

This resource consists of 13 high-level, short answer reflection and essay questions that will do more than just ask your students to regurgitate information.
