THE CASE OF THE COOPERATIVE POLAR BEAR ON NORWAY'S SVALBARD ISLAND

Most tourists who travel to the cold Arctic areas place the sighting of polar bears high on their wish list of animals to see.The two areas where this is most likely are the shores of Hudson Bay in far north Canada and the Svalbard Islands and Greenland. Many are fortunate to see polar bears on ice floes or wandering around the tundra. Most of these glimpses are quite distant. Some who visit the Arctic areas return disappointed at vague sightings. Some don’t see any polar bears. This unit takes students to the remote Nowegian Svalbard Islands. Along the way they will recognise that the Arctic contains other features of interest. Polar Bears are quite dangerous. Getting close to take photographs is risky. Find out how the encounter with one cooperative polar bear occurred.
