THE MURRAY DARLING BASIN OF AUSTRALIA - PART 2 -WATER RESOURCES AND LAND USES

This is the second unit in the series on the Murray-Darling Basin. It begins with maps indicating the size and variations of climate and landscapes. This is a major agricultural region of Australia though which a network of rivers flow into the major drainage systems of the Darling River (Northern Basin) and the Murray River (Southern Basin). This unit fits into studies of Inland water Basins; River studies; Agricultural studies; History of pre-colonial presence of Aboriginal people; colonial; history; water management systems; river flow modification and diversion ---in fact the more you encounter information the broader the study possibilities become. The pages are designed for classroom projection and discussion. The attachments are provided to give you the opportunity of providing copies (black and white/colour choice) for individual student use. This unit also touches on material covered in Coorong Studies of South Australia and River Realities of South Australia. Take your students into the Murray-Darling Basin by way of maps, data and photographs. There is a range of environments to encounter. The role of water - its availability, variability and quality is the resource foundation that will be the focus of Part 3 in this series.
