This is a HUGE 130+ page novel study on the gorgeous book “The Sideways Orbit of Evie Hart” by Samera Kamaleddine. This book is featured on the CBCA shortlist for Younger Readers in 2024.
The Sideways Orbit of Evie Hart follows the journey of twelve-year-old Evie Hart as she navigates the challenges of her final year of primary school. With a love for rules and routines, Evie finds herself grappling with personal anxieties and uncertainties, particularly as her family undergoes changes and she faces the prospect of starting high school. As Evie learns about the universe and her place within it, she discovers that embracing change and uncertainty can lead to unexpected adventures and newfound resilience. Set against the backdrop of friendship, family, and the mysteries of the cosmos, this tender and moving story offers young readers a heartfelt exploration of growing up and finding one’s place in the world.
This resource consists of a section-by-section comprehension guide. The guide is divided into two chapter “chunks” - about the length I suggest for weekly independent reading. The questions cover a range of comprehension skills, from literal to inferential, plus author purpose, comparing and contrasting, summarising, predicting and much more. A comprehensive answer guide is also provided.
Each section also has a creative response, designed to be high-interest, independent and engaging. These are often linked to the Creative and Practical Arts.
This book would be suitable for a whole class read-aloud, or as a Reader’s Circle book for grades 4-7.
There is a bank of ten Literacy Circle tasks, designed to be printed and laminated for future use. These involve a high degree of student choice, so as to be independent. All associated printables are also included.
There is also a writing assessment, based on the text. This is a informative writing task, linked to the theme of the text. This is presented as a booklet (both in PDF format) with a writing stimulus, guiding prompts, research guidelines and a independent tasks. I use prompts like this as both pre and post assessments to allow for structured learning.
There is also an additional bonus resource, ‘Fun With Tarot Cards’, which can be used with any grade from Stage Two upward. This consists of a set of printable tarot cards, as well as suggested fun, age-appropriate activities they can be used for in the classroom.
This is weeks and weeks of literacy learning for your classroom - no prep required!
I have many other literature-based resources in my store (most of them Australian) so feel free to check them out.
Happy reading!
