Do your students need support writing fluently? Using word mats are a great scaffold to get your students where they need to be with their writing.

This two-page transition word mat includes some tips for students on the following areas relating to personal narratives or more general narrative writing:

  1. Sequencing events (time order / cause and effect)
  2. Contrasting ideas (contrast and concession)
  3. Adding information (examples, adding details, and emphasis)
  4. Smoothing flow (general flow, summarizing, and repeating an idea)
  5. Emotional connection (expressing feeling and emphasizing emotions)
  6. Building problem or conflict
  7. Creating suspense or tension
  8. High point or turning point
  9. Reflecting on the experience
  10. Connecting to the reader
