Who sank the AHS Centaur in 1943?

The sinking of the* Australian Hospital Ship Centaur* in 1943 by the Japanese navy was used by the Australian governments for propaganda purposes, notably building unity amongst the Australian people to support the war effort as well as encouraging people to volunteer in community organisations such as Red Cross for fundraising. But there are many theories as to why the clearly marked hospital ship was torpedoed.
