Word Sorts are an excellent way to encourage students to look ‘inside’ words and think ‘why’. In the early stages they can be whole class activities: later group or individual. As a group exercise it works best with mixed ability groups. Encourage students to use correct terminology when discussing ideas. The teacher’s role in these exercises is to select words which illustrate what they want students to “discover” and ask appropriate questions to lead students through the discovery process.
