This Year 1 science resource gets children out into the local environment to discover all about trees. After a simple recap about deciduous and evergreen trees, children will explore their local environment, go hunting for deciduous and evergreen trees, tally their findings and answer simple questions about their findings. Children will learn useful topic-related words, be posed interesting questions (Think-lets), follow guidance through highly structured teaching slides (Teach-lets) about the challenges they are about the take on.
This resource provides 3 challenges. Challenge 1 and 1a encourages children to explore their local environment in the hope of finding deciduous trees, before tallying the findings and answering questions. Challenge 2 and 2a encourages children to explore their local environment in the hope of finding evergreen trees, before tallying the findings and answering questions. Challenge 3 is an extension of Challenges 1 and 2, encouraging them to draw and label trees that may be less familiar to them. Children will, again, tally their findings before describing one of the less familiar trees. All useful words and visual image prompts are provided. No answers are provided in this set of resources as they are open-ended challenges.
