Mastering Word Problems: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, and Estimation
This part of the guide features mixed word problems that challenge students to apply math operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—in real-world contexts. From calculating sales and profit margins to distributing resources, the exercises provide comprehensive practice for students at various levels.
Addition and Subtraction Word Problems
These problems focus on real-world scenarios, such as calculating total distances traveled, logs used in construction, or pieces of a ribbon left after cutting. Students will learn to:
- Add distances and quantities.
- Subtract to find the difference or remainder.
- Examples:
- Julie painted her house using 587 liters of white paint and 381 liters of sea green paint. How many liters of paint did Julie use in all?
- A treasure hunter found 966 gems, of which 738 were diamonds. How many were rubies?
Estimation Problems
Estimation helps students develop skills to approximate solutions when precision isn’t necessary. These problems involve estimating large numbers, making it easier for students to tackle real-life challenges that require quick mental calculations.
Examples:
- A restaurant ordered 50 crates of strawberries, with 766 strawberries per crate. About how many strawberries did the restaurant order in total?
- A parking garage wants to collect £263 in parking fees. If the charge is £4 per car, about how many cars will meet the goal?
Multi-Step Word Problems
These problems require combining multiple operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to reach a solution. They reflect real-world scenarios like budgeting, saving, and resource allocation.
Examples:
- Devin had 83 dolphin stickers. He gave 5 stickers each to 10 friends. How many stickers does Devin have left?
- Helen saved £30 in March, £29 in April, and £25 in May. She spent £26 on a keyboard. How much does Helen have left?
