The twins Viola and Sebastian are separated in a shipwreck. Fearing that Sebastian is dead, Viola disguises herself as a boy, calls herself Cesario, and takes up service with Duke Orsino. She falls in love with Orsino but cannot do anything about it because of her disguise. She also discovers that Orsino has fallen in love with Olivia but, following the death of her brother, she rejects him. Orsino sends Viola to Olivia to try and win her round but, thinking Viola is a boy, Olivia falls in love with him. Meanwhile Olivia’s steward, Malvolio, is trying to keep order in the house but her uncle Sir Toby Belch and his friends have other ideas. They convince Malvolio that Olivia is in love with him and make him look extremely foolish – Olivia thinks her servant has actually gone mad. When she sees Sebastian, who has survived the shipwreck, she naturally thinks he is Cesario and promptly marries him. Orsino is furious when he finds out but, once Viola and Sebastian meet and reveal their true identities, there is a happy ending – for everyone but poor Malvolio. Tina Daheley looks at what fake news is and gives students a guide to determining which stories are fake and which can be relied on. She talks to Megha Mohan, a senior broadcast journalist from BBC News, who helps her separate genuine and fake news. They show how deliberately misleading stories are often presented as real news stories and unpick some of the reasons why fake news exists. The main drivers of money-making, influencing readers’ opinions and satire are explored with a look at stories about high profile people. Several examples of stories that appear to be from trusted sources are shown and the problems with these stories are discussed. They then look at some of the fake news stories that appeared around the time of the 2016 US presidential election campaign that were shared on social media. They discuss how features of genuine news stories are used in fake news, such as headlines, photos, and the names of news providers. Advice is given about searching online for the news providers and finding an example of the same news story on a credible news site. Fake news can be convincing and Daheley explores how we can avoid being lured in by false stories. A group of young people are shown a sequence of fake and real news stories and they attempt to sort them. They discuss the importance of logos, trusted news sources, bias and language. The young people also talk about the trustworthiness of news stories and fact checking and how the use of quotations and opinions can make a story seem more convincing. Brutus explains to the crowd why the conspirators killed Caesar and then insists they stay to hear Mark Antony. Antony gives an emotional eulogy over the dead body of his friend. Teacher Notes Before watching the scene, ask your students to write down what they know of the characters of Brutus and Mark Antony from the play so far. How far do they see these characters as similar, and how far are they differentiated by Shakespeare? How do they think each character will react to the death of Caesar? Alternatively, you could write snippets from each speech onto cards (e.g. ‘as Caesar lov’d me, I weep for him’, ‘it were a grievous fault, and grievously hath Caesar answered it’), and ask students to try and decide which man is most likely to say each thing about Caesar. Ask students to brainstorm ways to calm down an angry crowd. Ask students to evaluate how effective Brutus’s speech is in excusing his actions.
