A powerpoint for AQA AS level unit 4 Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms (3.4.5 Species and taxonomy). Starter is getting students to think about how we classify organisms by getting them to sort cards into categories. No wrong answers! Gives an explanation on phylogenetics, taxonomy and hierarchy. There is a mini question sheet with easier questions to get the students used to the content before moving onto exam questions. Answers are on the powerpoint. There are also exam questions based on the lesson including definitions and using knowledge of taxonomic ranks to fill in tables and diagrams. Exam question worksheet comes with answers at the bottom.

A powerpoint for AQA AS level unit 4 Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms (3.4.5 Species and taxonomy). Starter is getting students to think about differences and similarities between similar organisms, attempting to get them to think what defines a species. Gives an explanation on the binomial system, defining a species and how courtship behaviour is important for the survival of a species. Includes definitions of key words throughout. Mini research task to get students to find the binomial names from common names of organisms (Internet is required for this) There are also exam questions based on the lesson including definitions, explaining why courtship behaviour is necessary and using knowledge to explain how you can find out if two organisms are of the same species. Both worksheets come with answers at the bottom.
