Students are given opportunities to reflect on the requirements of each question of Section A and think about how they can guide other students to be successful.
A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that assists students with comparing Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson and Exposure by Wilfred Owen. A very useful lesson for KS4 students about to sit their Power and Conflict question as part of AQA English Literature Paper 2. Also includes detailed annotated notes on both poems. Sign of Four - A fully differentiated lesson that looks at an exam-style English Literature question for Paper 1 on The Sign of Four by Conan Doyle and reviews the theme of class, the use of language in the extract and how the extract can link to historical context before students review their own answers and then peer assess each other’s work. Easily adaptable for other exam questions and for other exam boards.

Ideal preparation for KS4 students about to sit their AQA English Literature Paper 2 exam and for KS3 and KS4 students analysing the play as well. Definitely worth a download! Includes a huge pack of key quotes as well.
Romeo and Juliet Balcony Scene lesson, fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on Shakespeare’s play and in particular the famous balcony scene (Act 2 Scene 2). We explore in detail the use of language from both Romeo and Juliet as they present themselves to each other. We look at how Romeo takes on the role of a romantic hero whilst Juliet attempts to be more cautious. A fantastic lesson for KS4 students preparing for exams and easily adaptable for KS3 students.
This has been designed so students can work together during a pre-exam breakfast session in preparation for the AQA English Literature Paper 2 exam, but it’s useful for any exam board or any year group revising Priestley’s play. Romeo and Juliet lesson on the ending of the play. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on a number of key scenes from William Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet. We look at Romeo’s soliloquy before he poisons himself, as well as Juliet’s speech as she awakens and discovers the body of Romeo next to here. Finally, we look at the very ending of the play and the truce that both the Capulets and the Montagues agree on. We analyse the use of language in these scenes and explain their impact on the audience. Definitely worth a download!
Love and Relationships lesson. A fully differentiated lesson that analyses the use of language within Climbing My Grandfather by Andrew Waterhouse. We look at how mountains can be used as metaphors for life, before focusing on the descriptions of the grandfather, Includes an analytical paragraph scaffold, differentiated activities and questions and engaging resources that will prepare KS4 students for AQA English Literature Paper 2. This lesson is also easily adaptable for KS3 students as well.
We look at Of Mice and Men and Chapter Two, with a focus on the relationship between Lennie and George and how Steinbeck introduces the new characters of Crooks, Candy, The Boss and Curley. Additionally, we look at how Steinbeck uses a sense of foreboding to hint at the rest of the plot. A really useful lesson for students preparing for Literature exams but easily adaptable for younger students as well. Fully differentiated and resourced.
In this lesson on Darren Shan’s Cirque du Freak, we focus on Chapter One and developing some context around the idea of freaks and how we might perceive ‘freaks’ now. We move on to analysing Chapter One and explaining the presentation of Darren as a character and the impact of the language in the final two sentences. Designed for KS3 students but with a number of activities that could easily be adapted for older students.
We focus on using figurative language to improve our descriptions of dystopias. We look at similes, metaphors, personification, adjectives and other language techniques to help improve our descriptive writing. Moreover, we analyze a short extract for techniques and look at their impact on the reader. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson for KS3 students but easily adaptable for KS4 students.
As we look at Darren Shan’s Cirque du Freak, we analyse chapters four and five carefully, thinking about the characters that are introduced to us and how the writer creates tension and suspense for the reader. A useful lesson for KS3 students with a number of activities easily adaptable for other texts and age groups. Differentiated throughout.
Of Mice and Men lesson where we focus on how Curley is introduced in Chapter Two of John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men and look at some key quotes surrounding the character. We analyse the use of language within these quotes and think carefully about how Steinbeck is able to get across Curley’s personality to the reader. Fully differentiated activities and worksheets throughout.
In this lesson on Tom Becker’s Darkside we look at how the narrator builds atmosphere in description through the use of pathetic fallacy and personification, making comparisons between chapters four and five. We also evaluate the impact of some key quotes throughout the chapter. Fully differentiated throughout.
As we study Darren Shan’s Cirque du Freak, we look at Chapter Nine and think about how Shan is able to create tension for his readers using a variety of language techniques. We use our analyses to create evaluative paragraphs based on agreed success criteria and then peer assess our final paragraphs to ensure they are effective. A fantastic lesson for KS3 students and some very useful ideas and resources that could be incorporated into KS4 lessons as well. Fully differentiated and resourced throughout.
Of Mice and Men assessment prep lesson. In preparation for an English Literature-style assessment on Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, KS3 students analyse a key extract about Curley’s Wife and look at the use of language in preparation for an assessment. Includes differentiated worksheets to support students as they look carefully at the features used by Curley’s Wife and other characters within the extract. UPDATE: Now includes a detailed essay plan and writing frame for students to use!
As we continue to study Darkside by Tom Becker, we use our notes on tension within Chapter Seven to created detailed analytical paragraphs before peer assessing them around class success criteria. A really useful for KS3 students but with activities and resources easily adaptable for KS4. Differentiated througout.
Macbeth returns home - A focus on Act 1 Scene 7 from Shakespeare’s Macbeth allows students to explore the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and how there is a power struggle between them early on in the play. Includes differentiated activities and resources.
