The example text reports on Stanley Yelnat’s conviction for theft, from chapters 1 to 6 in the book. The Highwayman poetry pack containing a verse-by-verse PowerPoint presentation of Alfred Noyes’ poem, a pupil copy of the poem, a glossary and an event sorting activity with answers. Pupil Copy of the Poem A document containing the poem with each part and verse numbered to make it easy to refer to different sections, and space beside the text for note-taking. Poem Presentation The 21 slide presentation is organised with each verse on a different slide. The parts and verses are numbered. Two versions have been provided: one without a glossary, useful for first readings; and one with images or definitions of challenging vocabulary displayed at the bottom of each slide. Teach pupils about the use of literary devices and figurative language in the novel Stormbreaker using these four differentiated activities. The first novel in the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz is full of literary devices such as similes, metaphors and personification. Examples of these and more are explored to give pupils a deeper understanding of the text and enable them to create their own to enhance their writing. Literary devices and figurative language examples from chapters 1 to 8 are explored in the following activities: • Literary Device Match (differentiated x3): pupils match the literary devices with their definitions and examples (ideal as a paired or small group activity) • Completing Similes (differentiated x2): complete the similes using the appropriate noun phrase and then complete an extension activity • Completing Personification (differentiated x2): pupils complete the personifications using the appropriate verb/noun and then complete an extension activity • Identifying Literary Devices (differentiated x3): pupils find and underline listed literary devices used in extracts from the novel The following literary devices are covered by these activities: • Similes • Metaphors • Personification • Alliteration • Repetition for effect • Rule of three • Hyperbole • Onomatopoeia • Rhetorical questions Full answers to all activities are included. A set of three expanded noun phrase activities and a noun phrase poster, all linked to Chapter 1 of The Iron Man (also known as The Iron Giant) by Ted Hughes. These resources develop pupils’ understanding of grammar, creative writing skills and engagement with the novel. The following resources are included in the pack: • Noun Phrase Building Activity • Noun Phrase Identifying Handout • Noun Phrase Identifying Handout Answers • Noun Phrase Writing Activity • Noun Phrase Poster Noun Phrase Building Activity In pairs or small groups, pupils build expanded noun phrases using the cards provided. Two versions of the cards are supplied: a colour version, and a more challenging black and white version. Blank cards are supplied for pupils to change or build on the expanded noun phrases they have completed, or to create their own expanded noun phrases as an extension activity. Noun Phrase Identifying Handout Pupils identify the different parts of expanded noun phrases, and find the noun phrases in sentences, with activities getting increasingly more challenging. Example phrases and sentences are taken from Chapter 1 of The Iron Man. An answer sheet is provided for quick and easy marking. Noun Phrase Writing Activity Pupils create their own expanded noun phrases to describe the Iron Man by adding pre- and post-modifiers using the grid provided. An extension, a paragraph writing activity, is also included. Noun Phrase Poster Defines a noun phrase with examples of expanded noun phrases from Chapter 1 of The Iron Man.
