In this activity pupils will reflect on how things changed in Benin Kingdom after the last Ogiso king was exiled from the kingdom and the second dynasty of Obas took charge. The worksheet provides a Venn diagram sorting activity.

In this activity pupils will find out what jobs there were for ordinary people in the Kingdom of Benin by reading the job descriptions on the cards and matching them to the trade titles.
In this activity, pupils will consider what its surviving artwork tells us about Benin Kingdom. They will use the cards to match the vocabulary to the correct artefact. They could then use these artefacts as inspiration for their own art work.
This activity allows pupils to read a recount of the British Invasion of Benin and then sort the statements into arguments for and against the invasion. This activity would be good preparation for a class debate or for planning a written argument.
5. Written on the Bones: What was the Shang system of writing like?
This hands-on lesson looks at the different ways in which Shang people used symbols and ideograms as writing. After researching different uses of writing, pupils will be set the challenge of making their own oracle bones from clay and they will use a symbols key to write their own questions on them using Shang ideograms.

You could use this as a great way to start a new year, as pupils come together in unity to create a new class poem using the letters in the name of their class.
The pack contains a Powerpoint lesson, teacher instructions and pupil resources - everything you need for this fun poetry lesson, including warm up/getting to know you games and a fun teamwork project based on making and performing a class poem.
The activity allows pupils to work together to make a class poem that spells out the name of their new class. The session is based around Edward Lear’s ‘Alphabet Poem’ and the activities include suggestions for adapting the lesson for KS1 or KS2.
This resource is structured in the following way:
1. Fun warm up activities and games including name games, a classroom hunt activity, a paper-chain race and ‘Find Someone Who’ bingo.
2. A poetry time activity following the lesson Powerpoint to help the class to become familiar with Edward Lear’s ‘Alphabet Poem’. There are different options to adapt this for different age groups.
3. A group activity in which pupils create their own stanzas for the alphabet poem, using the letters that spell out your class name or their new teacher’s name.
4. A whole class performance of the new poem.

What was the Industrial Revolution?
In this lesson, KS2 pupils think about the impact of the Industrial Revolution in Victorian Britain. Pupils will engage with historical sources to make observations about a British city before and after the Industrial Revolution. Pupils will learn about changes to cities, employment, living conditions and the landscape and will play a game to reflect on whether the effects of the various changes brought about were positive or negative ones.

What was Anglo-Saxon food and drink like?
This lesson allows pupils to think about the foods they like to eat and compare them to the foods available in Anglo-Saxon Britain, both in terms of everyday meals and feasting foods. Pupils will design an Anglo-Saxon menu and have the opportunity to make and taste Anglo-Saxon honey bread.
