The word wall provides an instant introduction to the Spanish-speaking world, and is also great for reading, speaking and pronunciation prompts too. I often ask ‘quick questions’ such as ***¿Cuál es la capital de…?***, or ¿Sí o no? Madrid es la capital de Paraguay? - there are lots of questioning and speaking opportunities, using the word wall as visual prompts. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important - they’re a great tool for encouraging students to speak, and to construct sentences, from the very beginning of their Spanish learning. I’ve also found that there can be several countries that students don’t actually know, or have never heard of, so the word wall is really useful for helping them develop their general understanding and knowledge of both the Spanish-speaking and wider world. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format. The flag and text are big enough for students to be able to see and read from various locations in the classroom. There are two design formats to choose from - Spanish flag, or plain, which keeps prep costs to a minimum. EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES EUROPE QUIZ - IDEAL FOR UPPER KS4 / KS5 STUDENTS The resource is non-editable in a zipped format. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. This European Day of Languages quiz focuses on a range of topics and themes about Europe. Students can broaden and develop their knowledge of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The quizzes work well as a whole-group team quiz, and are also perfect for pair or small-group activities. The quizzes are for older students, who have a more developed understanding, knowledge and awareness of the world. Some responses will be generally well-known to students, others less so, as the questions range from basic general knowledge to more specialized factual knowledge. This ensures that the activity is equally about reflecting on what students know, as it is about what they can learn. In this way, the quizzes aim not only to consolidate existing knowledge, but also to enable students to learn more about Europe. The questions and answers also provide a comprehensive framework for further exploration of Europe, which both broadens and enriches the learning experience. I generally give students multiple opportunities over the school year to play the quizzes, not just on or around the European Day of Languages. Before we play, I always screen a clear map of Europe, to ensure that students can visualize it in its entirety, the location of individual countries within it, and in relation to each other. This provides an important learning context for students. The quiz opens with general questions about Europe, and then moves on to questions about a range of individual European countries. There are 80 questions across two challenges: Challenge 1: 56 multiple-choice questions, with four response options to choose from. The correct response is in capital letters. Challenge 2: 24 questions in TRUE / FALSE format. Where the answer is false, students should additionally give the correct response. The questions address and topics such as: music and the Arts; daily life; famous figures; geography; history; landmarks; language and linguistics; literature; politics; science; social history; society This is the General Knowledge Europe Quiz edition of the European Day of Languages Europe Quiz #2 - please ensure you haven’t already purchased that edition. Laminate the cards if you can - they are easier to manipulate, and remain in excellent condition for years. Have a browse in my store for more European Day of Languages activities and resources! They find that this way of working really does help them to develop their confidence and embed the vocabulary into their longer-term memory. There are lots of games and activities to play, and I’ve described several that are successful with my groups. They love to quiz and test themselves and each other on a regular basis - it’s a very popular alternative to more traditional vocabulary drilling tasks and tests. The vocabulary groups are as follows: saludos : días de la semana : meses y las estaciones del año : números 0-20 : mi familia : palabras frecuentes : frases útiles para la clase : preguntas y respuestas The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Spanish-English reference list of all 99 words & phrases. My students use their recall workbooks quite a few times, simply covering previous answers. This means that prep and paper are kept to a minimum. There are three written recall challenges: = Written Recall Challenge One students write the English word or phrase from a Spanish prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category = Written Recall Challenge Two with this challenge, students write the words or phrases in Spanish from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category = Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from Spanish to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category. This challenges the memory more than when the vocabulary is in the order learners first learn it in, with the additional challenge of moving between the two languages = Ideas, Notes and Next Steps encourages students to reflect on their progress = Card template for creative and practical application of language Laminate the game cards if you can - they are far more learner-friendly, and the additional prep and expense is definitely worth it, as the cards will last in excellent conditional for years. French Numbers 0-31 Challenge Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for cover lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so. All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I've used visual prompts such as math symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don't allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French math language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of math is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and arithmetic creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. My students also genuinely enjoy creating questions for each other. The set comprises the following non-editable files: 48 differentiated question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper; laminate if possible 2-page answer recording sheet 2-page answer key MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BON APPRENTISSAGE !

I think that lessons in the run-up to Christmas provide the perfect opportunity to revisit language we’re learnt earlier in the school year - my beginner French students really enjoy going back over and consolidating the vocab that they were introduced to right at the beginning of their learning. I created various sets of Christmas-themed vocab cards to get them feeling festive - it definitely works! I tend to have several sets all ready, and keep them in learning folders, so that students can choose which vocab groups they want to work on, though often, they like to work with the complete set, so it’s a good idea to have a couple of sets so that there are enough to go round. The Santas have vocabulary in the following word groups: Les salutations Les jours de la semaine Les mois de l’année Les quatre saisons de l’année Les nombres 0 à 31 Les couleurs Quelques pays du monde The Snowmen have vocabulary in the following word groups: Les animaux (indefinite article, all singular) Les parties du corps (definite article, range of singular and plural) Le temps Les fruits et légumes (definite article) Les matières scolaires (definite article) There are a lot of cards, which means some prep - if you can, laminate them, not only because they’re far better to learn with, but also because you’ll be able to use them over and over again for years! The quizzes are no-prep, and good to go - they’re non-editable, because of the Terms of Use of the clipart and fonts I’ve used, so have a quick look through before you play. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the quizzes help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Les pays francophones. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional vocabulary drilling exercises. The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write challenges have a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the verbs don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time. This prepares them really well for creative activities in French - they will have a rich vocabulary to choose from. The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical French-English reference list of all 99 verbs. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarize themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in French. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in French. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. There are three differentiated recall challenges: = Challenge 1: students write the English verbs from a French prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, French-English. = Challenge 2: again, students write the verbs in English from a French prompt, but the French verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. = Challenge 3: the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding French verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It’s really useful for spelling in French too. Have a browse in my store for more French resources, including special offer bundles and freebies. MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BON APPRENTISSAGE !

The prompt cards offer structured talk opportunities, and focus on vocabulary, structures and general knowledge that students are generally engaging with from advanced beginner German level. They also address a broad range of grammar points, such as adjectival endings, possessive adjectives and word order. Some questions and answers include modal verbs and subordinating conjunctions, which makes conversational German more realistic and communicative. Students will not have engaged with all the language used at this stage, and this makes the activity equally about engaging implicitly with new language, as well as practising and reinforcing the current language focus. Both the questions and answers are a starting point: as students develop more competence and confidence in their German, they recreate either similar exchanges, or create entirely new ones, using the given language as a frame of reference. This also helps them develop independent learning and creative writing skills, making the activities really useful for multi-skill language learning. The set also provides students with an opportunity to develop their translation skills in German from the beginning of their learning, which is very important: they see that ‘word for word’ is rarely, if ever, accurate, and that a correct translation means correctly conveying the meaning of a clause or sentence, rather than every word that appears in it. The set comprises the following non-editable files in a zipped format: = 100 cards, 50 questions and 50 suggested responses in German (10 cards per page, 10 pages) Laminate these if possible, as they’re more learner-friendly, and they will remain in excellent condition for years, so they can used many times = 6-page booklet containing all the questions and answers in both German and English = 6-page translation activity booklet, translating from German into English = notes and recording sheets - if students don’t have class workbooks, they can use the sheets to make notes as they create new questions and responses, and write their completed versions out in full. These sheets are also useful for more formal assessment purposes if required. Have a browse in my store for more German resources, including special offer bundles and freebies.
