French Telling the Time Dominoes Set 1 features analogue clocks times o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour in French, with 3 games and 3 challenges. The games really help students develop their skill in telling the time in French in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, learning completely independently. Dominoes games are ideal for language learning, with a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading. They are perfect for pair and small-group work too. Students work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino time-sequence line, on the classroom floor or on a long(ish) table, by matching the times and the clock faces. This kind of activity is really versatile, and useful not only during the introduction phase of learning these particular clock times, but at many times across the school year - for cover lessons, as starters, warm-ups, plenaries, practice & refresh, and also free-choice activity time - it’s a great idea to have a range of folders ready for students to select particular content according to what area they feel they’d like to work on. Please read the Terms of Use. These French paired speaking prompt cards an ideal way to promote speaking in French class. Working in small groups or pairs helps students feel confident about talking in French without feeling ‘on the spot’, or worried about not getting their pronunciation and accent right in front of the whole class. The prompt cards offer structured talk opportunities, and focus on vocabulary, structures and general knowledge that students are generally engaging with from advanced beginner French level. Language addresses a broad range of grammar points, such as question formats, gender agreement and articles. Some questions and answers include modal verbs and subordinating conjunctions, which makes conversational French more realistic and communicative. Students will not have engaged with all the language used at this stage, and this makes the activity equally about engaging implicitly with new language, as well as practising and reinforcing the current language focus. Language varies from basic beginner French such as Quel âge as-tu ? J’ai quinze ans to more involved and complex exchanges such as La mode éthique, c’est trop cher selon toi ? The set also provides students with an opportunity to develop their translation skills in French from the beginning of their learning, which is very important: they see that ‘word for word’ is rarely, if ever, accurate, and that a correct translation means correctly conveying the meaning of a clause or sentence, rather than every word that appears in it. The set comprises the following non-editable files in a zipped format: = 100 cards, 50 questions and 50 suggested responses in French (10 cards per page, 10 pages) Laminate these if possible, as they’re more learner-friendly, and they will remain in excellent condition for years, so they can used many times = 6-page booklet / answer key containing all the dialogue questions and answers in both French and English = 6-page translation activity workbook, translating from French into English notes and recording sheets - if students don’t have class workbooks, they can use the sheets to make notes as they create new questions and responses, and write their completed versions out in full. This set of Spanish conversation translation worksheets is a companion activity to Spanish Conversation Starters 1, though it works just as well as a standalone translation exercise for***advanced beginner Spanish*** and intermediate Spanish students. The content mirrors that of the conversation starters, and really does help students consolidate and embed essential advanced beginner Spanish to intermediate Spanish language across all key language skills. All the sentences are in question format. There are 200 translation questions in total: 100 from Spanish to English, and then repeated from English to Spanish. Translation is a specific skill that students need to work on carefully and gradually as they progress in their language learning. It’s quite common for beginner language learners to attempt to translate word for word from their first / home language, and though this will work occasionally, it frequently leads to errors. I remind students that there can be several ways to translate correctly: the important thing is to be sure that the original intent and meaning of the question is replicated in the translation. We discuss a range of possible translations, both into Spanish and into English, as a whole-group, which is a really popular and successful language learning activity. I always include dual translation, that is from Spanish to English, and then from English to Spanish, as this really encourages students to think about language, and to be creative with it. ANGLAIS ESL EFL ENGLISH FOR FRENCH SPEAKERS ENGLISH FOR CHILDREN ENGLISH ANIMALS VOCABULARY CARDS learn a range of animals, and help to create a lively language learning environment. Children can develop their skills in word recognition and recall, pronunciation, speaking, listening and reading in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They’re a great way of looking at the indefinite article in English, and comparing the concept of gender in both languages too. It doesn’t matter is any of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the card games encourage children to engage happily and confidently with English, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in English. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of unknown words using both visual clues and prompts, as well as linguistic indicators. There are 24 animals featured, across a series of decks, which enable you to vary and differentiate your games: Deck 1: picture and words cards, with both an image of, and the word for, the animal in English, which is useful for multi-skill learning, particularly in the introductory phase of learning animal vocabulary, and for familiarising students with the written word in English. Deck 2: picture-only cards, useful for vocabulary recall Deck 3: word-only cards in English, useful for word recognition, reading and spelling. Deck 4: word-only cards in French, useful for a variety of games focusing on vocabulary recall Deck 5: both English & French words on a single card, useful for close comparison of language, and recognition of corresponding words Laminate the cards if you can, even though it’s extra prep and expense, as they are far-more learner-friendly, and last for years, so it’s definitely worth it. I have a set with decks on different colour paper: although it can reduce challenge in games, for absolute beginners it’s very useful, and also ensures learners with additional needs have extra support so that they can participate fully in the games and activities. Remember to vary the decks in the games to ensure maximum differentiation and challenge. Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. I definitely find it useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas. As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. I generally work with telling the time in Italian quite quickly with my beginner Italian students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in Italian class, discussing daily routines for example. There are two questions: Che ora è? (1 o’clock, 5 past one etc) / Che ore sono? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vero o falso? and students write either vero or falso - where the answer is falso, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. ESL EFL BEGINNER ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS This set of English conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner English students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning. The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the present perfect tense. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning. Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning. I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going. As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. French reflexive verbs can be quite tricky, particularly for students whose first language does not have a similar reflexive verb group. Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are fixed conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognize and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written French is accurate, and that their understanding of French across the skills of***listening, speaking, reading and writing*** is robust. Students become very familiar and confident the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations certainly help to embed that successfully. The resource has the following structure: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in French. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. The questions are aimed at advanced beginner French into***intermediate French*** students, and have a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. The questions are all in French, and are differentiated, ranging in complexity and challenge. There may be some vocabulary and grammar that students are not yet familiar with, and these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language. This means that the activity is not solely about practising and consolidating learned language, but also actively engaging with, and learning, new language. A range of grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects and question format in French. There are translation questions from both French into English and English into French. This introduces students to the concept of translation from a very early point in their French learning programme. To maximise the learning potential, we look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices: identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses. The question and answer card writing templates give students the opportunity to apply their Italian very practically, as they create both questions and answers for each other, using the reference book as a form of writing frame to help them form their language correctly.
