GCSE FRENCH IDIOMS French Speaking Practice Encouraging students to speak can be quite challenging in the languages classroom, and I’ve found that even my more advanced learners can be quite reluctant, especially if the group is fairly large. I use a range of strategies to promote speaking, and idioms, proverbs and fun expressions which sound quite strange when translated literally are really popular - for example, we have regular competitions to see who can get the most idioms or expressions into dialogues and conversations. This works really well for students of all stages and ages. The posters show the literal translation, which generally sounds very odd, such as this particular idiom Occupe-toi de tes oignons ! - Deal with your own onions! and the correct corresponding translation. We also discuss other possible translations into English, which helps them understand the concept of translation, and that there are potentially many correct ways of expressing meaning accurately. The posters also lend the learning environment a real French ambiance, promoting the everyday use of French.
There are two backgrounds - the French flag looks great, but definitely uses a lot of ink, so you may prefer the poster without a background - this looks just as good! Keep checking back for more posters if you like them, as I have a huge collection!

I like to have sets of super simple worksheets that I can give to my Primary French and beginner KS3 French students, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. I give my students these worksheets at the same time as introducing quarter to the hour in French, so that they can practise and embed both recognizing the time, and writing the time phrase itself. Students really enjoy the opportunity to test their recall too.
The worksheets are useful in a number of contexts: I use them for cover lessons, as starters, plenaries, five-minute refreshers and home learning activities. I occasionally use them for more formal assessment purposes too.
Students find this How to tell the time in French quarter to the hour list freebie helpful:

PRIMARY LATIN KS3 LATIN NUMBERS ROMAN NUMERALS DISPLAY WORD WALL These word wall cards are great for creating an instant introduction to Latin numbers and Roman Numerals 1-20. I really like to have key vocabulary displayed in a particular area - I find it gives the learning environment a real language ‘feel’ and ‘look’, keeping the language alive every day - and of course the word wall cards are useful during the introduction phase, and we also use them for developing language skills and awareness in general. We like to do number guessing and calculation games at regular intervals too. My younger learners enjoy taking their mini-whiteboards or notepads, and doing Latin vocabulary or calculation race games at the word wall.
There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format - the words are definitely big enough for children to be able to read from various location in the classroom. There are two backgrounds to choose from - color or black wave. I definitely recommend that you print on card stock and/or laminate - the word wall will hang really nicely, and will also last for years.

GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN KS3 ITALIAN REFLEXIVE VERBS LIST I give my language learners of all grades and learning phases a whole series of reference lists, that build up into a really comprehensive Italian vocabulary reference bank over the course of their language learning programme. They’re really popular with my students, as they know they can just go to their reference file or folder, and find what they need. They tell me that they feel far more confident about their Italian when they have a good grasp of core high-frequency Italian vocabulary. They’re great for quick Italian vocabulary quizzes too.
There are of 25 high-frequency Italian reflexive verbs in the infinitive form, alphabetically both Italian-English and English-Italian - my students get these pretty much at the beginning of their program, even before we start to work on conjugation.
If my group is small, and depending on the particular work we’re doing, I provide students with a set of double-sided and laminated reference resources. My language students all have a reference file or folder, again from the beginning of their learning, and part of helping them develop independence in, and responsibility for, their learning, is to give them opportunity to keep their learning resources in good order, and easily accessible. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Italian flag, which I tend to use for vocabulary display, and black wave. I use a background for vocab lists, as feedback from learners over the years suggests that a visual can be helpful when learning what can be a large amount of new Italian vocabulary.

BACK TO SCHOOL ITALIAN GREETINGS BUONGIORNO BUNTING BANNERS It’s great to create a new look for the new school year - I use bunting / banners not only to create a real Italian look and feel in the learning environment, but also to promote everyday language and core vocabulary for learners of all ages. I encourage my beginner Italian students of all ages and stages to build up comprehensive vocabulary banks that they can reference easily whenever they need it, and they’re also really useful for regular vocabulary audits, which really helps students map their progress and keep track of their learning. Reference resource for students focusing on high-frequency Italian adverbs. The adverbs address a range of categories, for example, temporal / time adverbs, place / location adverbs, frequency adverbs.
I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class.
This list is a collection of 25 high-frequency Italian adverbs that students will meet in the advanced beginner Italian to intermediate Italian stages of Italian learning programmes, and useful for students beginning advanced Italian as a vocabulary audit.
It’s an important step in language learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful Italian vocabulary bank, are able to recognize Italian adverbs, and are confident with the meaning of those words in their first / home language, so that they can produce more detailed and descriptive language and more complex sentences and texts as soon and as accurately as possible. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning the adverbs all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing Italian vocabulary, and it is definitely the case that frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory.
The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on high-frequency Italian adverbs for your students, the list is a good starting point.

PRIMARY LATIN CLUB LATIN FOR CHILDREN LATIN FRUITS & VEGETABLES WORD & PICTURE LIST Ten fruits and ten vegetables in Latin, with both words and pictures - I like to give these to my young beginner learners of Latin, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their Latin vocabulary books, or file them in their Latin vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful Latin vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning.
We also discuss which fruits we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own word and picture dictionary lists, adding to it as they learn more. I don’t necessarily have all the fruits in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a***broader range of words and genders***, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The fruits and vegetables show the gender of each noun, using (m), (f), (n) and (f.pl) to denote masculine, feminine, neuter and feminine plural respectively. This is really useful for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in Latin, specifically gender of Latin nouns, how they change in the plural form, and the absence of article.
The fruits are:
the apple
the bananas
the grapes
the lemon
the orange
the peach
the pear
the raspberry
the strawberry
the watermelon
The vegetables are:
the broccoli
the cabbage
the carrots
the cucumber
the lettuce
the mushrooms
the onions
the potatoes
the sweetcorn
the tomato

A great instant reference resource for students focusing on high-frequency Spanish adjectives. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class.

The purpose of the list isn’t to simply learn all 25 adjectives by rote: it’s a longer-term reference resource that students use for example when they’re writing creatively, preparing written texts, or working with their talk partner to develop speaking skills. My students also use their vocabulary reference lists to help them audit their developing Spanish vocabulary in general.

VIELEN DANK UND VIEL SPAß IN DER DEUTSCHSTUNDE!
SPANISCH FÜR DEUTSCHSPRACHIGE ALEMÁN SPANISH FOR GERMAN SPEAKERS SPANISH FRUITS WORD SEARCH for German-speaking Spanish learners.
Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features a Spanish fruits word search with answer key, perfect for beginner Spanish learners of all grades. The fruits include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps learners think a little more creatively about language, and their new Spanish vocabulary - they may learn la manzana, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example.
There is a Spanish to German grid, where learners are prompted with the Spanish word, and look for it in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features a German word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on the grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and German, and facilitates learner independence.
There is an answer key grid for the search grid, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, develop more independence in their learning, and students genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing!
The word search is in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading and writing from left to right in both Spanish and German. I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners, ensuring language is very clear and accessible. This kind of activity is really versatile too - I use for sub lessons, as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m focusing on fruits in Spanish.
Have a browse in my store for more Spanish for German speakers resources, and a wide range of other Spanish teaching and learning materials, with dollar deals, special offer bundles, and lots of freebies too!
