These 60 task cards are perfect for developing Italian language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising how to tell time in Italian. There are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. The questions are a straightforward introduction to, and practice of, o’clock and half past the hour in Italian. I generally work with telling time in Italian quite quickly with my beginner Italian students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example. There are two questions: Che ora è? (1 o’clock, 5 past one etc) / Che ore sono? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vero o falso? and students write either vero or falso - where the answer is falso, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. It’s also a really popular activity too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other. The set comprises the following non-editable files: Set of 60 question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Laminating is definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as the cards are far more learner-friendly, and stay in excellent condition for a long time, so you’ll be able to recycle them for years. 2-page answer recording sheet. Create a fabulous Spanish look and feel in the learning environment, promoting Spanish as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of the classroom. Telling time is key beginner Spanish vocabulary, which is really useful to know as soon as possible, and students are able to familiarize themselves with how Spanish words ‘look’, and also how sounds are represented in the written form. I use these kinds of flashcards / posters to gradually introduce and work on the specific target language vocabulary we’re working on, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward ¿Qué hora es? to ¿Sí/ no? or ¿Verdadero o falso? questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as negative sentences No, no es medianoche, es mediodía and so on, paying particular attention here to the masculine and feminine. These are really simple ways to really try to get the most from classroom learning decor, using them as visual language prompts, as well as keeping the target vocabulary fresh in students’ minds, and as language refresh and revision by changing the decor at certain points of the school year. I like to have sets of learning displays for students, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell time. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Spanish flag or plain, so 56 flashcards / posters in total. These German animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous German look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of German. They introduce learners to a range of animals in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how German words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger German students really love the animals posters, and like to compare the German and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom. We don’t necessarily learn all the animals, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory games too. Students definitely notice the different words for the, and ask why some animals are der, and others are die or das. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. This set of German conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner German into intermediate German students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning. The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the past tenses. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practicing language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning. Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning. I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going. As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. Twenty vegetables in French, with both words and pictures - I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my Primary French learners, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their French vocabulary books, or file them in their French vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful French reference bank for both class and home learning. We also discuss which vegetables we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own visual vocabulary lists, adding to it as they learn more vocabulary. I don’t necessarily have all these vegetables in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a broader range of words and sounds, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The vegetables focus on the definite article, either singular or plural, which is a great for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in French, specifically gender of French nouns. These French vegetables flashcards / display posters create a fabulous French look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner French learners. They introduce learners to a range of vegetables in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. I use these kinds of flashcards / posters to gradually introduce and work on the concept of gender, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward Qu’est-ce que c’est… ? to Oui/non or Vrai/faux questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as negative sentences Non, ce n’est pas la carotte, c’est la tomate and so on. The key focus on on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction. Students definitely notice the different words for the, and ask why some vegetables are le, and others are la, then we look at the plural les. The vegetables are: artichoke : asparagus : beetroot : broccoli : cabbage : carrots : cauliflower celery : corn : cucumber : eggplants / aubergines : French / green beans garlic : leeks : lettuce : mushrooms : onions : peas : red peppers : yellow pepper potatoes : sprouts : spinach : sweet potatoes : tomato The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as orso and lupo. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning. ADVANCED BEGINNER FRENCH CONVERSATION STARTERS This set of French conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner French students. Speaking is a language skills that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning. The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the past tenses. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning. Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning. I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going. As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. There is a Spanish to German grid, where learners are prompted with the Spanish word, and look for it in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features a German word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on the grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and German, and facilitates learner independence. There is an answer key grid for the search grid, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, develop more independence in their learning, and students genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work.
