ANGLAIS LANGUE SECONDE ESL EFL ENGLISH COMMON VERBS FOR FRENCH-SPEAKING LEARNERS OF ENGLISH English language verb reference resource for French-speaking students focusing on high-frequency English verbs. I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference, either in class or at home. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. This list is a fourth collection of 25 high-frequency English verbs that students will meet in the beginning to intermediate stages of English learning programs. They are common English verbs, so they will see, hear and use the verbs regularly in daily life. They include regular and irregular verbs, and are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize English verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in French - at that point they can move on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning 25 verbs all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing English verb vocabulary - embedding the verbs into long-term memory will come through frequent usage. There are two alphabetical lists - one English-French, and one French-English, as I’ve found that beginner language students prefer to have both as a reference resource. There are two backgrounds to choose from - England flag (which looks good as grammar / vocabulary display), and black wave - students tell me that this makes vocab lists more visually appealing, which is really useful when they’ve got a lot of vocab to work through and learn. Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features a Spanish fruits word search with answer key, perfect for beginner Spanish learners of all grades. The fruits include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps learners think a little more creatively about language, and their new Spanish vocabulary - they may learn la manzana, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example. There is a Spanish to German grid, where learners are prompted with the Spanish word, and look for it in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features a German word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on the grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and German, and facilitates learner independence. There is an answer key grid for the search grid, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, develop more independence in their learning, and students genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! The word search is in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading and writing from left to right in both Spanish and German. I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners, ensuring language is very clear and accessible. EFL ESL English Fruits Flashcards Posters These English fruits flashcards / posters create an instant introduction to 25 fruits in English in the classroom. They are perfect for developing English language and literacy skills, really getting the most from classroom display. They introduce learners to a range of fruits in English from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of English words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. The workbook is ideal for advanced intermediate French students who are beginning to work with more complex language and texts in French, and developing their knowledge of tense and mood in French. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, language learners do often try to conflate what they know about grammar in their first language, with the grammar of the language they are learning, and with students whose first language is English , I frequently see students using avoir instead of être for verbs which require the auxiliary être. There are 48 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically Italian-English and English-Italian. There’s also a first person conjugation reference in the present, perfect and imperfect tense, which is really useful for checking which verbs take essere in the perfect tense, and for the past participle. As students become more competent in conjugation, the first person reference enables them to predict accurately other forms of the verbs. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out an Italian or English verb, with teams giving the corresponding Italian or English verb - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential Italian vocabulary. The resource is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Italian-English and English-Italian. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Italian across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Italian, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Italian. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Italian verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. ESL EFL ENGLISH NUMBERS 0-31 English Numbers 0-31 Task Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of English and English numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in,* speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in English*. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on Numbers 0-31, but also as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn numbers in English, but also to develop English Language skills in general, to enjoy working with English, and to feel confident about doing so. SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCH FREEBIE Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie Spanish Christmas word search features fourteen common Spanish Christmas words, which helps to develop students’ awareness of some Spanish Christmas vocabulary and customs, such as la Nochebuena and el turrón. I use this as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and traditions, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too. There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. BEGINNER SPANISH SPANISH FOR CHILDREN SPANISH COLORS FLASHCARDS POSTERS Los colores en español - 8 posters / flashcards These four my favorite color flashcards / posters make an ideal speaking prompt in the Spanish classroom - I encourage students to ask each other ¿Cuál es tu color favorito? as a lesson starter / warm-up, and to select a different color every time they answer. As they learn more colors, their answers become more varied. I tend to introduce the plural form with the connective y (and) quite quickly, so that students can extend their answers as much as they possibly can - they have great fun seeing who knows the most colors, and can create the longest answers. The key colors are: blue, green, pink and yellow. There are two backgrounds to choose from - either the Spanish flag, or black wave. Laminate the posters if possible, or print on card stock, particularly if you’re going to use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too: they’ll hang really nicely, stay in good shape, and you’ll be able to use the posters for many years to come! Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. It doesn’t matter if this particular language doesn’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the flashcards / posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in Spanish, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in Spanish.
