Information sheets for an active learning activity about alloys, accompanied by a research sheet/worksheet to fill in. This was designed with OCR 21st Century Science C4 (Material Choices - Improving the Properties of Materials) in mind, but alloys are covered on many syllabuses and this could easily be adapted. An answer table is included in the PowerPoint so you can get students to self-mark/correct.
All images are used under a CC0 license (no attribution required, for personal or commercial use).
Revision summary sheet for the sound. One version contains closed questions (e.g. circle the correct answer, cloze activity), and the other has more open questions. There is an answer sheet for the more structured version students to check their work.
Electronic structure diagrams for the first 20 elements, up to and including Calcium. Feel free to use in any of your resources, either commercial or personal.
Worksheet I created for Y7 with the AQA Activate 1 - Forces at a Distance topic in mind, although it could be used/adapted for other specifications and year groups. There are 2 worksheets (one has been condensed to 1 page, whereas the other has larger text and boxes) and sheets for the extension task to be placed around the room (all images used on this sheet are under a CC0 license, free for personal or commerical use without attribution). The students will need graph paper to complete the second part of the extension.
Hope you and your students enjoy it!
Students watch the demo of group 1 metals reaction with water, writing down their observations, then write the equations for these reactions and answer questions on them. Stretch task of writing symbol equations.
Worksheet covering electrolysis equipment, anions/cations and their movement, and the uses of electrolysis. I used this with an information hunt but you could use it with laptop research or as a revision summary sheet.
Designed with OCR 21st Century Science in mind but could be used for most specifications.
Students use the information in the table to find out about the different rock types and fill in the table.
I followed this up with:
'Write a guide for a Brownies/Scouts/Guides group to explain how they can decide whether a rock is sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic.‘
Stretch task: do this as a flow chart.’
Activity used with Y7 class for a lesson on the menstrual cycle - I used this with the information sheets as an information hunt acitivity, but could work with laptops, a video or as a cover work activity with textbooks. Challenge questions to print on the back, differentiated gap-fill version included.
Scaffolded worksheet that shows students how to answer questions on melting/boiling point and link these to structure and bonding. Includes examples for giant covalent, ionic, simple molecular and metallic. Students use their new skills to answer 4 real past exam questions. Good for revising C3 (Structure and Bonding).
3 tasks I set my Y7 and Y8 students for remote learning about the Rock Cycle. The students all drew the diagram of the rock cycle in their book. Higher ability annotated it with the clues AND added extra detail via the stretch questions, middle ability annotated without the stretch questions. I have included my attempt/modelling, which I attached to assist students with this task. Low ability drew a simpler diagram and copied & completed a gap fill (very low reading ages - some pre-reception).
High and mid ability then wrote a story/created a storyboard to describe the journey of a piece of rock at point 1, all the way through the cycle to point 12. This was followed by a Kahoot challenge and an educake quiz.
Rock Cycle Remote Learning 1 - higher ability
Rock Cycle Remote Learning 2 - middle ability
Rock Cycle Remote Learning 3 - lower ability
I have attached them as both PPT and PDF in case students have difficulty opening PPT at home.
Summary sheet for revision of waves topic light section, covering reflection, refraction and dispersion. Used with a mixed-ability Y8 but could work with most years.
Covers pathogens, barriers to pathogens, preventing the spread of infection, cardiovascular disease and treatment, antibiotics and various examples of communicable diseases. Designed for B2 of OCR 21st Century Science, but could easily be used with other specifications.
