Summer Solstice Assembly/Presentation 21st June 2021 Key Stage 2 Have you ever wondered why the days are so long in the summer and so short in the winter? The length changes throughout the year. Around June 20th or 21st, we experience what’s known as ‘The Summer Solstice’, which is the longest day of the year. People from many cultures have held summer solstice celebrations for thousands of years. Summer is a time to celebrate renewal, life, fertility and the potential for a good harvest. It’s been celebrated with outdoor feasts, festivals, singing, dancing, and bonfires. This age-appropriate assembly aims to; • Explain the science behind our longest day • Present a number of traditions and customs surrounding the summer solstice. In this unit, pupils partake in a range of fun, rhythmic activities which focus on developing listening and responding skills. It can be delivered to a small group of pupils, or as many as you have. It’s Christmas! Ten original, percussion-based, Christmas-themed pieces suitable for pupils in years 5, 6, 7 and 8. Ideal for Christmas shows, carol services, reviews and Christmas-themed music lessons. Minimal resources are required, only bells, chime bars, cymbals, glockenspiels, triangles and claves/woodblocks and not all are needed for every piece! Pupils learn about the percussion family, how to play their instruments correctly, how to read, play and perform using lettered score with the option of a traditional notated music score. Pupils also learn to use range of musical terms and signs. Each piece has detailed step-by-step instructions and printable scores. In order to support your delivery, you will find MIDI file recordings of each song. You do not need a musical background to perform these compositions. Two Native American Performance Pieces Tatanka – (Buffalo) and Wimaheliyaye – (Sunset) Key Stage 2 Two very different pieces; simple to put together and extremely effective, each original composition can be completed in two or three lessons. Tatanka Instruments - Drums and/or Tambours, Guiros, Maracas, Woodblocks and/or Claves Musicians - 5 or 5 groups Tatanka is Native American for Buffalo. Teach you pupils to perform an original, powerful, five-part, Native American-style composition using a small range of untuned percussion instruments and voices. Wimaheliyaye Instruments - Flute or an electric keyboard using the ‘Flute voice’ Musicians - 1 or 1 group Wimaheliyaye, is a Lakota word that means Sunset. Teach your pupils to perform an original, haunting Native American-style composition using an electric keyboard. Pupils learn a little history of Native American music, about the percussion family of instruments, graphic and lettered notation and a range of musical terms and signs. Identifying Percussion Instruments by Sound and Sight One Unit of Five Music Lessons Reception and Key Stage 1 You do not have to have a musical background to deliver this unit. Comprising of five, easy-to-follow, fun music lessons based around percussion instruments. Pupils learn to recognise a range of 12 percussion instruments by sight and sound. Castanets, Chime bar, Cymbal(s), Guiro, Maracas, Triangle, Bell, Cabasa, Claves, Drum, Tambourine and Woodblock. The instruments are not prescriptive, simply use whatever percussion instruments you have and follow the lessons plans. This unit can be delivered to a large or small groups of pupils. Not confident teaching music and this pack was perfect. Easy to follow and pitched just right for my year 1 class. The only instrument I couldn’t find was a cabasa so replaced it with a rain-stick.
