A full lesson (recently observed as 'Outstanding') which depicts how to write a formal letter applying for a job. Based on the Edexcel's English Language (Paper 2) imaginative writing task. A fast-paced, pupil-led lesson with varied activities and integrated (graded) peer assessment. Worksheets are provided for differentiation of the task and a full lesson plan shows details of all activities (although the PPT is very straightforward anyway). An 8 page hand-out deigned to guide pupils through the process of writing a commentary for their original writing. This includes: a two page guide on how to structure a commentary (including key questions to promote individual analysis); an assessment task where examples of varying grades have been given and pupils have to allocate grades using the marking criteria and self assessment grid to ensure all of the basic frameworks of language have been covered. It is ideally given to pupils before writing their original piece to keep the commentary in mind throughout. An excellent tool to improve students grades with independent study.

A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson. Objective (A03): Grade 3: Make obvious point of comparison. Make simple comments on writers’ ideas and view points. Level 4: As above and makes some specific references to theme, language and structure. Level 5: Discusses a range of comparisons in some detail. Explains the writers’ ideas and viewpoints with quotations to support. Pupils complete a series of activities to build a framework to asses both poems. They then complete an analysis framework sheet and a series of P.E.E paragraphs (with a support sheet for LA pupils).

Suitable for all exam boards but designed for Edexcel English Language Specification (also attached) and grade boundaries from 3-6, which can be altered easily to accommodate HA or LA pupils. A full lesson and marking criteria (suitable for students) with 1-9 scale. Lesson aimed at 3-7 range, but could very easily be adapted. The lesson introduces the features of a newspaper article and contains paired and group activities encouraging pupils to investigate structural and linguistic features of articles. There is then a creative writing activity and the grade boundaries for peer (or self) assessment. Designed to cover A05 :Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, selecting and adapting tone, style and register for different forms, purposes and audiences.
