This outstanding resource has been designed by experienced teachers to help provide stretch and challenge for students studying why the League of Nations failed to stop the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. It can be used as a starter, plenary, revision or assessment activity. If you are looking for something a little easier for middle and lower ability students, then check out my card sort matching exercise on this topic.
The resource includes nine diamond shaped cards which include a range of factors to explain why the League of Nations failed to stop the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. The document is provided in Microsoft Word so you can edit the resource if you wish to customise it further by changing any of the key factors that I have included. Once students have cut out the cards out they are set three tasks including:
1. Remove any reasons that you don’t think are important. Record and explain why you have removed them.
2. Arrange the remaining diamonds to show any links that you can find between the different reasons. Record and explain your reasons.
3. Make a smaller diamond shape using the four most important reasons to explain why the League of Nations failed to stop the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. Record and explain the reasons for your choices.
At each stage students should be feeding back to their group or the class and explaining their choices. The discussion and explanation around the choices that they have made are critical in helping them develop their understanding of the topic.

This outstanding card sort has been designed by experienced teachers to help students studying the introduction to the Industrial Revolution 1750 - 1850. It can be used with the full spectrum of ability as a starter, plenary, revision or assessment activity, but it is primarily designed as a special needs resource. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a fully editable Microsoft Word document and an accompanying PowerPoint. The Word document includes aims, instructions and eight picture cards and six heading cards. Once students have cut out the cards and correctly matched the picture cards to both their correct heading and before and after labels, they can extend their understanding further by sorting them into their order of importance before sticking them into their books. The PowerPoint includes the aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, a snowballing starter, introduction and facilitates the card sort as well as including the correct final version.

This outstanding lesson has been designed to help students studying the historical controversy surrounding the death of Emily Davison. It can be used with the full spectrum of ability, but the text level of the task would suit mainly lower middle and upper ability students. I have also produced an alternative information card sort for lower ability students on this topic or if you wish you can buy both resources together for the bargain price of £5.
When you purchase this resource you will be able to download Microsoft Word document as well as an accompanying PowerPoint. The Word document includes aims, instructions, two heading cards labelled 'accident' and 'suicide', along with 11 sources labelled A to I, that need to be sorted. The PowerPoint presentation is designed to help facilitate the lesson and includes aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, appropriate video clip links, assessment questions, pupil mark schemes and feedback sheets.
The lesson kicks off with a snowballing starter activity, followed by a brief one side introduction to Emily Davison and her background. The next two slides discuss the historical controversy and include quotes from historians supporting each interpretation. This is then followed up by completing the source investigation / card sort. Once this is complete, students can then feedback and then do a follow up assessment on the topic. This optional, but I've included additional slides with a pupil mark scheme that can be easily adapted for to your own assessment scheme if necessary. Can the massive death and destruction of armed conflict ever be morally justified? Is there such a thing as a just war? Should we stand by and allow innocent people be raped and murdered in horrible acts of genocide? This outstanding resource has been tried and tested in the classroom over many years and aims to help students understand some of the main arguments for and against the Just War Theory. If you are looking for a lesson which ticks all the boxes on collaborative learning then this beautifully illustrated market place activity on the Home Front during the First World War is designed to help students assess both its significance as well as how civilians were affected by the war. This is a great engaging lesson which will help to enhance your teachers toolkit and get your students talking for weeks and doing extra projects.
As you can see from the detailed preview slides, the tasks and activities have been written to appeal to the full spectrum of ability and have been set up around the market place activity where the key slides in the PP are printed off and either pinned on the classroom walls or set out on the tables so that students move around and fill in their information on the summary sheet. This is a very proactive lesson designed to get students up, moving around, sharing and working collaboratively. As an additional layer of differentiation, I have ragged or traffic lighted the information slides to help direct students. This fun and active learning lesson has been designed to help students investigate who was a typical Roman through a market place activity on Roman Society. This is followed up by a selection of optional activities including writing an essay on who was a typical Roman, a knowledge quiz or a heads and tails activity, depending upon the ability of your class. This lesson is designed to get your students out of their chairs, moving around and working together. The idea is to print off the information slides and post them around your classroom for your students to gather and share or print enough of them for group work.

This resource looks at how tolerant was US society by looking at the dark side of the Boom by looking at the aims and methods of the WASPs and KKK during the 1920s. The resource also looks in detail at why the KKK's membership increased and suddenly decline after a series of scandals.

This outstanding resource which has been field tested in the classroom on many occasions, gets students to review the work of the league of Nations in the 1920s and 30s and decide whether the statements are correct by ticking 'yes' or 'no'. They the have to give some supporting evidence to back up their decision.
Once completed successfully, students should then see the connections between the Leagues successes and failures be able to come to an overall judgement about why it failed.
This resource could be completed prior to doing an exam or writing an essay. Its an all round nice little add on that works well as a starter or plenary.

This card sort is great way to get students to sort through the causes and consequences of the death of Thomas Becket in 1170. It is designed to fit around any text book or video on this topic and provides support for lower and middle ability students.
Students are given eight cards with the causes and consequences mixed up and two headings labelled causes and consequences. This should take a core group no more than 10 minutes before feeding back and then sticking their cards into their books, whereas a low ability group might take 15 minutes. The process can be speeded up by getting students to create a key, rather than curring out the cards and then sticking the sheet into their books.
This active learning activity makes a great starter, mini plenary and plenary. When you purchase this activity, you will be able to download a single page Word document, which can be edited to suit your own students. I would personally read a text book, worksheet or watch a video clip before attempting the activity.
I have also included a basic six slide PowerPoint to help facilitate the card sort, it includes aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, two starters, one plenary, an activity page, a video link and a template.

This clever little card sort can be used as a starter or plenary exercise on the impact of the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066
Students have two headings and have to cut out the cards and sort them under one of two headings, Britain before the Norman invasion and Britain after the invasion.
For more able students I have included an extension exercise or discussion point for the class asking them to assess whether life for ordinary people improved or got worse after the invasion.
If you have an especially bright group, you could ask them to create a key to identify which cards were to do with religion, money, society or power.

This great little resources on Hitler's foreign policy is designed to be used as either a starter, mini plenary or topic plenary. It can also be used as a homework or revision exercise on Hitler's foreign policy.
Students are given 4 headings connected to Hitler's foreign policy. They are then expected to sort the cards under the correct headings such as: ripping up the Treaty of Versailles, Lebensraum – Living Space, Defeat Communism and Factors which helped Hitler. This activity is suitable for foundation and core students.
The second activity, which is aimed at core and gifted and talented students is use the linking cards to match up 12 factors to show how they are linked.
I have included two versions, one sorted with the answers and one mixed up to be photocopied and given out to your students.
The instructions for this card sort are:
1. Sort the cards under their correct headings.
2. Copy or stick them into your exercise book or a piece of A3 paper.
3. Feedback to a class discussion.
4. Use the linking cards to match up 12 factors, copy them into your book and then explain how they are linked.
This activity is fun, simple to use and great for a lesson observation or to increase student engagement.

This outstanding resource is a simple card sort that can be used with a range of abilities from foundation to gifted and talented. It looks at one of the most important turning point in both Irish and British History, the Battle of the Boyne, 1690 whose consequences still echo down to the present day.
The card sort can be used a starter or plenary. It contains two heading cards labelled ‘Causes of the Battle of the Boyne’ and ‘Consequences of the Battle of the Boyne.’ Students are instructed to sort through fourteen cards. I have deliberately included more consequence cards, than causes cards. They are written with a neutral, non judgemental tone allowing students to form their own opinions.
