We have bundled together our KS4 and KS5 resources on the causes of the Miners’ Strike in this package. These fun and interactive resources cover the history of coal mining before 1984 as well as the causes which can be found in the 1970s and the 'Winter of Discontent, the political climate of the 1980s., media influence, the government’s privatisation agenda, NUM opposition to pit closurers and finally splits within the NUM. If you are interested in the Miners’ Strike 1984 - 1985, then we have created a dedicated YouTube Channel with carefully clipped interviews and resources which cover every aspect of the strike: @MinersStrike1984 As head of history at Mexborough School for over 27 years, I saw at first hand the devastation caused by the government closure of the pits. My school was 2 miles away from where Billy Elliot, Brassed Off, The Full Monty and Kes were filmed and written. I could not but helped to moved and inspired by the spirit of the people of South Yorkshire. These fun and engaging lessons have been designed to teach a unit on the origins of the trade union movement in Britain and the founding of the Labour Party. Each lesson includes a PowerPoint and Worksheet, which have also been converted to PDF just in case you haven’t got office. All the tasks and activities have been differentiated. We have gone to town on this topic so there are word searches, source questions, quizzes, missing word activities, extended writing tasks, heads and tails, starters, plenaries and videos clips in each lesson. These resources are suitable for KS3, KS4 and could easily be used for an adult education class in the community. Its really important to teach this topic as its often forgotten and missed out by fat too many schools, yet trade unionism is one of the key foundations of our democracy. It focuses on several themes including the problems that the miners faced, the solutions that they came up with and the impact of the steam engine on revolutionising the coal industry. These outstanding resources have been designed to help students studying how the Industrial Revolution changed the Textile Industry between 1750 - 1900. It is suitable for a range of learners and includes some great ideas and strategies to try out with your students. The information in both the PowerPoint and the worksheet looks at the how the new inventions transformed the textile industry. Both have been beautifully illustrated and carefully linked to the decline of the domestic system and the birth of factories and mills. The follow up activities look at how the new machines changed the way people worked and looks at some of their negative reactions. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a fully editable 3 page Microsoft Word document and a 16 slide PowerPoint Presentation, which includes aims, objectives, a snowballing starter and an introduction and a range of activities, video clips and extension exercises to support the worksheet. The main activity focuses around a summary table on each invention for the students to complete. This unit is designed to build upon the previous module by examining in depth the history of Conisbrough Castle. It will allow students to look at the strategic decisions that were taken to site the castle, its impact on the local area as well as to look in detail at how it was built and aspects of everyday medieval life. This module is also designed to fulfil the requirements of the new KS3 National Curriculum order for history by doing a depth study of an aspect of local history. However, it should be noted that all the modules that are taught at KS3 are in some way linked back to local history as well as contextualised with references to the modern world. The main resources for this module have been developed over the years by the history department in cooperation with the Mexborough Heritage Society, the Ivanhoe Trust, English Heritage and Becta. In 2001 the Virtual Tour of Conisbrough Castle was given a national teaching award by Becta for the innovative use of ICT. I have also included all the relevant lesson resources that are mentioned in the scheme of work as well as my award winning booklet on Conisbrough Castle, which has embedded a wide range of differentiated activities. My students always enjoy this module which centers on a unique grade 1 listed building which is a world heritage site. Check out the videos on You Tube of Conisbrough Castle. This outstanding and beautifully illustrated lesson has been designed to help students studying the problems faced by the Weimar Republic and how successfully it dealt with them in the period 1919 - 1923. It deals specifically with the problems of setting up a democratic republic, dealing with extremists and their putsches, coping with the aftermath of the Treaty of Versailles, the Ruhr Crisis and Hyperinflation. The lesson includes a number of activities which can be seen in the detailed preview. The main activity revolves around completing a table summary of each problem, what action was taken by the government and evaluating how successfully it was dealt with. Alternatively the relevant slides could be printed off, displayed in the walls or on tables whilst the students complete a gather and share or market place activity to summarize the information. These outstanding lessons have been designed and field tested by experienced history teachers who are at the cutting edge of the skills which underscore our subject. The Spanish Armada is a topic which is all too often rushed and not given the attention that it deserves, yet it is every bit as important as the Battle of Britain or the Norman Conquest. If those brave Elizabethan seamen, backed up with cutting edge technology and skillful leadership based upon merit rather than NOability had not fought off the invading Spanish Armada, then our island history would have been very different. Then again, maybe fate stepped in to save the day as the inscription on the Armada medal, issued by Elizabeth I in 1588 Said: ‘God blew his wind, and they were scattered.’ All the resources in this bundle can be purchased separately. However, they are all aimed at different ability groups. The card sort on what happened is aimed at SEND students, whilst the card sort on why was the Spanish Armada defeated is aimed at middle to upper ability. The same is also true of the Source Analysis and the Market Place Activity. However, the Diamond 9 activity is designed to develop the higher order thinking skills of upper ability students. Occasionally, I will give students a choice as to whether they pick the card sort of the Diamond 9 activity. This great lesson has been fine tuned to help students understand and evaluate why the Spanish Armada was defeated in 1588. This fun and engaging lesson is suitable for the full ability range, but I have also produced a lower as well as a higher ability version of this resource which can be purchased separately or as a bundle. On its own the card sort can be used as a starter, plenary, homework or main activity linked to a main stream textbook or video on this topic. However, I have also included a detailed PowerPoint, with additional information, tasks and activities centered around the card sort so that it is a complete lesson. The worksheet includes aims, instructions and eighteen statements to be sorted under three headings labeled ‘Luck’, ‘English Tactics’ and Spanish Mistakes.’. This outstanding study guide, worksheet or assessment for learning pack has stood me in good stead over the years and looks at the problems facing US farmers in the 1920s. As you can see in the preview panel, the information is broken down into carefully crafted bullet points to aid the learner both in lesson and during revision. Each section is consolidated with an activity which is suitable for the full range of foundation, core and advanced students. I usually read the study guide with my students who are suitably equipped with highlighters to help them summarise and pick out the key facts. On page 2 of the guide I have included a flow chart to show the vicious cycle of debt and poverty that the farmers got caught up introducing the new mass production technologies to agriculture as a spider graph created by my own students summarising the key facts. The consolidation task is a thinking skills review diagram that is designed to promote discussion and debate in groups before feeding back to a class discussion on the IWB. Page 3 of the booklet has two past paper questions from OCR. I always get my students to work there way through them to build up their confidence, but you could always direct certain learners to particular questions as part of your differentiation. The first question is a describe, whilst the second is an explain question. On page 4, there is a full OCR essay question which requires an introduction, main body and conclusion. In the next section, I have also included a n Oxford and Cambridge source analysis question 'on what is the message of this cartoon.' In the final section of the booklet, I have included self help guides for each question to help students write their answers as well as pupil mark schemes which can be used to peer and self assess their work.
