This is a writing frame/template for a 9-mark Assess question for AQA GCSE Geography. I am trialling these with my GCSE students. They are probably not perfect but I’ve tried to break it down as much as possible for students struggling with longer answers and higher-order command words. This should be printed out on A3, folded in half to make an A4 booklet, with each page on one side. The format of how this works: pg1 - Walkthrough - I’ve really tried to take a step-by-step guide (and for your weakest students they should only ever use this perhaps?) pg2 - Template - This is where it’s more of a compartmentalised layout so they can see it’s in 3 sections for Assess - I suggest when they have mastered the Walkthrough version, that they go straight to the Template Version. pg3 - Exam Answer - so how they would see it in the exam pg4 - Improved answer - I’ve put on a levels table in student speak and hen you’ve marked it, they have to find evidence of what you mean and fill in last column. Then there is space for them to make improvements to ONE section of their answer. Thanks for looking and hope you found this useful to you and your students. Good luck with your results! This is the first lesson from Enquiry Question 1 of the Tectonics Unit. This lesson revises the placing of plate boundaries and introduces students to some main case studies which will be followed up in subsequent lessons. Students will produce an annotated map. This is the second lesson from Enquiry Question 1 of the Tectonics Unit. This lessons walks through creating an hypothesis, scatter graphs, and a full Spearman’s Rank statistical test. Using this sheets, students explore different types of maps in their Atlases. Before this activity, students should be aware of the 3 classifications of geography. I have used this successfully with yr7 students when introducing them to geography and maps. Can easily be adapted to fit whatever version of Atlas you have at your school.

This could run over 2-3 lessons. Students focus on annotating the booklet - use the question sheet to help prompt discussion. Other activities to help approach the booklet includes paired and group work. This DME is based on the SAMs but with a Rio focus with information taken from Simon Ross textbook. Thrown together as it's Christmas! Sing the song and explain why it was written. Pick out lyrics relating to Africa. Put evidence around the room (last few slides) plus relevant pages in Africa - students find evidence to disprove the lyrics. To end, discuss the use of the song: Should we still sing it if it's factually incorrect? Or is it good to sing it still? Is it all incorrect? Is any of it true?

This could come before or after a short writing task which answers the question above. I have made it this evening having marked one set of books which have poor written English and also do not explain the reasons why he won (but describe them so well!).

This a new set of questions (which mirror the two SAMs currently available for Paper 3) and is based on the JUNE 2012 pre-release resource booklet. There is now a basic markscheme for content (including appropriate AO splits) but you will need to use the SAMs for levels table. This was somewhat tricky to put together as the old-prelease seems a lot wordier than the unseen resource booklets we are seeing so far. I hope you find it useful.

The first lesson in Enquiry Question 1 in the water unit for Year 2 of Edexcel A Level Geography - Paper 1. This lesson looks at the importance of the water cycle and draws on students’ prior knowledge. There is also a follow-up homework task (IST). A quick lesson concentrating on the command word ‘analyse’ for the Synoptic Paper 3 geography paper for Edexcel. There are some practice questions using old-prelease stimuli with a markscheme. Students need to complete a practice question from one of the SAMs beforehand to help with the flow of the lesson - resources for this are on the powerpoint. Enjoy.
