Useful tool for reasoning practise in Year 6. Includes a hand-drawn bar-graph for interpretation (best done with a ruler). Also useful for identifying children who are not counting from the correct place and producing erroneous answers.
Exercise also includes a second sheet where children need to identify different quantities on a speedometer and a scale. This will require some decimal conversion requiring division and multiplication by 1000 (grams to kilograms and vice-versa).
Exercises involving fractions of numbers (e.g. 2/5 of 240) that can first be discussed as a class leading into paired work. The powerpoint discusses the formulas used for working out fractions of numbers and also touches on the point that, when dealing with fractions, X and OF mean the same thing.
To finish with, plenary-wise, there is a task that children can complete (either in pairs or individually) geared to their level confidence at this particular point. Together with good quality questioning, this should prove to be useful resource across Key Stage 2 (particularly in Years 5/6).

A game on Powerpoint where children work in groups of 2-4 and are given a company, along with a balance of half a million.
Serves as good practise for those 2 mark questions in the arithmetic paper, as well as a touch of reasoning.
Children must play four rounds where they will be expected to work together to do the following.
multiply 3 numbers by 2 numbers.
multiply 4 number by 2 numbers.
Divide four numbers by 12.
Divde four numbers by 36.
They may also have to work out differences and subtract from their current balance (depending on their accuracy in the rounds!)
The most accurate group, with the highest balance at the end, wins!

Task that asks pupils to interpret data about the performance of football teams and then place 10 teams into a league table based on the information provided.
They will need to works systematically and use the following maths skills:
ordering
addition
multiplication
subtraction
finding the difference
use negative numbers in context
copy and place data into a table correctly
work logically and systematically
Task can be differentiated by changing expectation of what you wish pupils to do - e.g. you might just ask children to order the teams and simply provide their total points. Greater depths could be asked to fill the whole table with minimal support.
The cover page contains a couple of tips but this is down to the teacher to discretion as to how much support ‘tips’ they wish to provide.
