The Ghost of Christmas Past - comprehension written in the 1st person by the Ghost of Christmas Past as he explains his role on Christmas Eve - visiting wrongdoers can be a trying business when you’d rather be tucked up by the fire!
The Christmas Tree - first person opinion piece written by a rather grumpy Christmas tree who laments on being dragged into his human household for a month every December.
Both comprehension come complete with a 15 question comprehension paper and answers for ease of marking.

Halloween: The Footsteps in the Attic:
A short story about a young man who buys a run-down house only to discover there is something strange going bump in the night. Story is accompanied by a comprehension quiz that runs a similar line of questioning to a year 6 SAT paper for good practice. Answer are also enclosed for ease of marking.
Bonfire Night Lights in the Sky
A short poem and opinion piece by the author, detailing his memories of November 5th when he was a child. Poem also contains examples of simile and alliteration and can be used for modeling poetry pieces, while the text can be used for discussing elements such as fact/opinion, true/false, retrieval and inference. Comprehension quiz is enclosed with answers also for ease of marking.
A reading comprehension about Bonfire Night, comprising of a short poem and a first-person text about the author’s view of November 5th.
This text can be used in guided reading, whole-class guided reading or independent reading. The text is accompanied by a comprehension quiz.
Text can also be used for modelling writing and GPS.

A good assessment tool that covers much of the arithmetic content from the National Curriculum for Year 5. Can also be used to assess entry level at the beginning of Year 6 and together with the Year 6 assessments can be ideal for showing progress throughout the year.
The test is set out in a very similar format to a SAT paper and all answers are included on the same page for ease of marking.
A time saving assessment tool providing a quiz for year sixes to inform their teacher on work that needs to be done in specific areas. Exercises include:
Determiners ‘a’ and ‘an’
Which Punctuation Mark?!.

Modal Verbs of Certainty and Possibility

Each page has a 10 mark marking system. You could give the pupils one exercise at at time (out of 10) or give them the whole quiz (out of 90). The quiz could also be used to show progress if taken at the beginning of the autumn term, for example.
A poem consisting of 8 stanzas that explains Henry’s sixth wives. Good cross-curricular link between English, poetry writing and history. Poetry contains examples of alliteration, repetition, metaphor, rhyme and rhythm.
First stanza sample:
Henry wanted a male heir
A bouncing baby son
Katherine of Aragon couldn’t give him one
So Henry told her they were done.
“I’ll find another wife,” he said
And consigned her to the bin
And before his poor first wife was dead
He was chasing Anne Boleyn.
Comprehension consists of 15 SAT style questions ranging from:

Practise at reading timetables, calculating time durations and some word problems mixed in at greater depth level. Good resource for around mid-year and good practise for SATs reasoning as the reasoning paper usually incorporates a timetable question.
If you’re struggling to find something to fill those end of the term time gaps then this might give you half an hour respite. Rearrange the anagrams of film titles. Can they get them all?
A starter exercise to get the class thinking about formal and informal language and promote class discussion. There are also a couple of slides based on missing commas just to jog pupils’ memories.
An A4 sheet of useful conjunctions (and relative pronouns) that children can use in their writing. Ideal for laminating and keeping in their drawers. When writing, they can tick off different conjunctions to encourage using a wider range.
A good starter exercise just to reinforce which numbers are prime and which are not. How do we know if a number is prime?
Some work on common factors also.
A worksheet to monitor children’s capability and understanding in using the four operations with both simple and mixed fractions. If you’ve also downloaded the elicitation task, it can be a very useful tool to highlight the progress the children are making throughout your schemes of work. An Elicitation Task for year 6s to determine children’s current understanding before embarking on a teaching sequence. Questions relevant to SAT arithmetic test and also incorporates word problems that require working out percentages. An exercise children can do in pairs, groups or individually based on identifying subordinate clauses and conjunctions.
I find that children often get confused when asked to underline either clauses or the conjunctions. This is a good exercise to get them used to what the vocabulary is referring to.
