This gives students a question and four potential answers; they must choose the correct answer and then explain what the three wrong answers have done incorrectly. Topics include simplifying expressions, expanding brackets, factorising expressions and solving equations with the variable on one side. I have purposely only highlighted the correct answer and not suggested what has been done incorrectly with the other solutions so students (and staff) aren’t tainted by my personal thinking and develop their own. I am hoping this will lead to some great mathematical discussions in the classroom.

This is designed to test all aspects of y=mx+c. There are 4 different "explosions" of increasing difficulty that should encourage discussion in class and hopefully develop deeper understanding of the concept of equations of lines.

This takes students through simple angles properties (straight line, triangle, full turn etc) to parallel lines to angle properties of polygons and finally to circle theorems. These are not designed to fill a lesson with practice but as starters or plenaries which lead to discussion. The matchings reassure students that their answer is correct or that they may need to check their answers carefully; I have found that the "spare" question is checked far more carefully than with an exercise from a text book.

This idea is from Craig Barton and is an excellent one (check them out his at website); essentially it is four questions based on the same information. There are four here which use average, area, quadratics, cubics, speed, sequences, angles and time as well as other topics. This really should create discussion and a deeper understanding of the topics covered on top of ensuring that students actually read the question. I hope these are worthy! I will be using these as starters or plenaries.

Three “Crack The Safe” activities on solving quadratics, one by factorising, one by completing the square and one by using the quadratic formula; each question (6 on each sheet) has three possible solutions. These allow students to self-check their answers from the possible solutions whilst the teacher can go and help those who require it. I use these for starters or plenaries or as the first task after introducing the topic.
