The part whole model is often used for small quantities where children should be able to see how many of something is there without counting, instead, they will subitise; they can also use base tens or hundreds to visualise the division.

Both KS1 and KS2 children with a good foundation will begin to really explore numbers, they are encouraged to think of numbers in different ways. For example, they will begin to see the number seven as 4 and 3 or 5 and 2.
