This is a busy lesson and is fourth in a sequence of lessons that consider how computer systems integrate hardware and software. In this lesson, students consider what happens in the CPU during the fetch-decode-execute process. This lesson may need to be differentiated for some classes. There is an opportunity to consider how the registers work using the little man computer model using an online model. In the previous lesson, students were asked to complete a homework research activity, so if you have not run this lesson you will need to delete or change this activity. The content of this lesson is a core part of the learning for the GCSE computer science course and asks students to understand that while the computer is running a program, the data and instructions need to be stored / held. You can extend students to understand that this disappears when the program stops or the computer is switched off. This lesson is an introduction to a third unit of work that challenges students to consider the hardware and software on a computer system and how they interact. The unit will follow the GCSE specification for Pearson Edexcel Computer Science, but each lesson can stand independently. In this lesson, students must identify and describe a range of peripherals, and explain the difference between hardware and software. This lesson is suitable for key stage 3 and key stage 4. The teacher’s notes would enable a non-specialist to lead the lesson. It is suitable as a cover lesson to preempt delivery of the more detailed lessons in future.
