Maryann Kovalski is a much loved author of children's books. Her illustrations are favourites with all children. In this unit there are suggestions for activities across the curriculum for books: The Wheels on the Bus, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Brenda and Edward, The Big Storm, Grandma's Secret, Pizza for Breakfast, and Alice and the Birthday Giant. There are math problems, science experiments, language arts projects, and art and craft ideas.
At first glance it would seem that Franklin would only be suitable for very young primary students, but there are several aspects that make Franklin suitable for older students as well. For example, see the patterning activities for Franklin’s Blanket and you will see that they are ideal for introducing arrays for interpreting multiplication and division sentences in the Grade 3 Number Sense and Numeration. The Rainbow Fish. A novel study unit for primary grades.
Using the beloved story of the Rainbow Fish your students will have opportunity to discuss friendship and being kind. They will learn about tessellations, number bonds and discover a game to play with a partner. There are activities and worksheets for beginning sounds, quotation marks and questions. This is a unique novel study unit that a teacher could use for 35 school days. The novel is Key to Rondo by Emily Rodda. The novel deals with an imaginary world contained in a music box. There are 34 chapters and in this unit each chapter is headed with at least one curriculum objective. New vocabulary is listed for each of the chapters. Then, for each chapter, there are activities relating to each of the objectives. On separate sheets there are questions for each chapter.
Samurai Kids Book 2: Owl Ninja is an excellent book for a novel study. It works well on many levels. It has a huge appeal for young readers and lends itself to providing opportunities for exploring history, culture, and life values.
