Hi, I'm Ellie and I am a secondary Music teacher based in Dubai. I trained in the UK in 2019 in the British Curriculum and moved to an IB school in Dubai in January 2022. Rhythm and Pulse: Dots and Boxes (Lesson 1 of 2) This lesson looks at how to read notation and rhythms using dots and boxes using the words tea, coffee and soup. Students interpret when to clap using the dots in the boxes and when to rest using blank boxes. We then build on this using the word coffee to interpret quaver beats and soup to interpret minim notes. Students then do a group performance using polyrhythms in four parts.

Topic: Rhythm and Pulse Suitable for: KS2 and KS3 This is the updated sequence of learning for the topic Rhythm and Pulse. The original version is still available in my shop. This lesson is the first in a sequence of six where students learn about Rhythm and Pulse. In this lesson, students will learn the definition of the words rhythm and pulse and try to clap a basic rhythm using dots in boxes. Students will also compose their own rhythm and watch a video of the musicians ‘STOMP’ to understand how polyrhythms are used to make music.
