Two activities that recap the 1920’s section of AQA’s USA topic. The game of draughts is differentiated so that one colour of the board has harder questions than the other. The finger twister can work with the powerpoint spinner. The revision clock worksheet allows students to check how much they understand of the topic. This can be followed by group work to fix the gaps that they have. There is also a Frogger inspired board game and Blockbusters

A lesson that forms part of a SOW for a three year GCSE for AQA America 1920 - 1973 Opportunity and inequality. This lesson looks at women in the 1920’s and investigate how far women;s lives changed in the 1920s. Students investigate flappers, the anti-flirt club etc to evaluate the changes. There is a GCSE question to practice interpretations skills, there are sentence starters provided to help the those who struggle to start a question but the lesson include challenge tasks to stretch the top end as well.

After struggling to find lots of sources for exam practice here is a selection of Public Health sources. Ideas: Students have to try and place them into time period. Get students to work out the message and purpose of each source. Print them out and link them with each other or with key words.

There is over a 150 medicine key words, events, people, cards based on the history of medicine GCSE topic. These can printed and laminated. When printing choose to print 8 pages on one page as they they are a better size for tasks. These can then be used for a multitude of tasks, such as timing them into putting them into a time periods. I did this every so often after a couple of times, the time it took was halved. They can also be used for class game of pictionary where they have to choose one at random and describe or draw it for the class to guess. Placing them on the tables and then with whiteboard pens making links between different people and events or group them into different factors such as war, communication government etc. AFL task where the table has to sort them into those they can explain and the ones that they struggle with.

A lesson in a SOW intended for a three year GCSE looking at the AQA: America 1920 -1973. Students look at the causes of the economic boom in America. Students use a card sort to rank the causes of the boom. There is a GCSE question included with sentence starters for the less able and challenge tasks to stretch the top end. There is also a model answer for students to evaluate as a class or on their own. There is also a writing frame for students if they need it.

This lesson looks at Kennedy’s and Johnson’s policies to create a New Frontier and Great Society, students look at what they did and how it helped differed aspects of America. The lesson includes challenge tasks to stretch and challenge the top end. There is also a GCSE question with sentence starters to help those who need it. The First lesson in a SOW intended for a three year GCSE looking at the AQA: America 1920 -1973. Students look at the impact of the first world war on America and the world, students investigate what the world was like before the war, they decide which country would be the best investment opportunity. They then investigate if they were right by looking at what the war did to the world. There is a GCSE question included with sentence starters for the less able and challenge tasks to stretch the top end. There is also a model answer for students to evaluate as a class or on their own.

This version of connect four involves printing off the tokens and laminating them. This allows you to write on key words. At the end of a lesson students can be chosen to choose a key word and define it and then place it on the game grid. This is a good way of using AFL to gauge students understanding, this works especially well for revision of a topic

This task works well for a recap activity. The images can be swapped if wanted. Students annotate the images with notes on what they can remember about the topic. Students can then try and make links between the different images.

A booklet that goes through the key time periods in the study of history of medicine. This can be used as a homework task for students to recap what they have learnt or given out as a revision task. I used this as a starter coming up to exams to get students to focus on their weakest areas. It includes a section for them to recap the key factors needed to explain why medicine improved. There are also boxes to allow students to plan questions.

This is combined by completing a star diagram with a mixture of Christine Counsel’s categories of significance. There is a writing frame for a GCSE styles question.

Students have to read through different sources and work out why Boudicca lost and begin to explain different reasons for failure. A short scheme of work that introduces students to basic historical skills but based around the Romans. Looks at Boudicca, Caesar, Why the Romans are important? etc. This would work well with year 7 but could easily be adapted for lower years as there is lots of scaffolds for the activities.
