Radical Equations with No Solution - Group Activity

(0)
This activity is designed to be used for groups of 4, 3 and/or 2 members. It practices solving radical equations with one and two square roots having no solution. The radical equations contain: a monomial, a binomial and a rational expression under a radical symbol two radical expressions on one side and respectively on the both sides of the equation All the equations require rearranging. If it is possible it requires squaring once. Activity Directions: Partners will each have their own set of seven problems of various difficulty. They can reduce some of them to linear. Students write down the solutions of the problems on the recording sheet provided. Then partners record their answers in tables on a group response sheet and compare their results. They must verify that all equations have no solution except one which has one real root. I called this special equation “white sheep equation” and it is the equation A7. The group which has solved correctly all the equations and has found the “different” equation first wins, however it must keep the result secret so the other groups can also reach it. Answer keys are provided.
