A lesson that looks at one of the great victorian inventors, Rowland Hill, who invented the Penny Black stamp which transformed Britain and its relationship overseas. Students will assess the impacts of the invention through card sorts, categorising and prioritising tasks before they decide what the greatest impacts of the invention were. They follow this up with writing a post card to Queen Victoria to sell her Rowland Hill's invention. There are literacy support materials and differentiated activities suited to all abilities. The case study knowledge for the period 1900 - present which looks at conscientious objectors and their treatment by the government and the public. Students should be able to give examples of CO treatment and explain government actions. The lesson also includes a 4 mark question which compares the crime of heresy and COs (support material and activities sets up the exam question).

A lesson which looks at the changes that took place in the years after the Civil War. Students sort cards in to two categories 'things got better' and 'things got worse'. They then need to categorise these cards (e.g. laws, social changes etc). The cards then need to be ranked so plenty of opportunity for discussion and deeper level thinking. The main task is to respond to the lesson's title. Literacy support (sentence stems, key words are included). Students will have the chance to practice GCSE skills in the write up and there is a slide of additional sources that higher ability students can use to further develop their arguments.

This lesson looks at the key factors that led to such poor living conditions during the industrial revolution. Students are introduced to a comic of a London street in 1890 which they use to identify problems. The main activity requires the students to complete a matrix of the problems that they find in the towns and cities and why these issues exist. They do this by extracting evidence from a range of different people's views about the problems. Finally the students use the data to write a report about what the issues are, why they exist and what should be done. Literacy support included.

Students learn about the one of the key flash points from the Cold War. There are a range of activities, such as a fact file task, plotting the ‘13 days’ on a crisis graph and the main task is a newspaper article (success criteria, literacy support and differentiated). To end they need to determine who was the victor in the crisis by writing a tweet setting out either the USA or Soviet’s view on the outcome of the crisis. Students start by adding detail to a never heard the word grid which cover the unit. They then start to collect evidence to show how the Nazis influenced people's lives. They must decide how this would impact Jewish people living in Germany by matching their evidence to a range of categories. This is followed by a postcard activity whereby students write to a pen friend to outline how and why their lives are changing. Literacy support provided as well as step by step instructions and differentiated resources.

Students begin by watching a clip from Platoon, whereby they suggest adjectives to describe the impression given re American involvement in Vietnam and share their opinions on the source and what it suggests. They are introduced to 5 different reasons for US action in Vietnam, which they have to link to a description for each reason and a supporting quote. They then decide which of the 5 factors were the main reasons for US involvement. They main activity is to create a script for a voice-over to either condemn or support US actions.
