I’m Rachel and I've been teaching for 18 years! I first taught English (TEFL) in Japan and Madrid and then taught French and Spanish in Surrey. I subsequently worked in a UK curriculum school in sunny Dubai. I have now relocated to the UK and have a gorgeous baby daughter! I have a learning-centred approach and encourage my students to be active and reflective learners. I really enjoy the creative process of making PowerPoints and worksheets and hope you enjoy using them!

French Film Worksheet: C'est quoi un bon prof? AS Level Education Teaching Resources.

I use this worksheet with my Year 12 students with extracts from the French films: a 5 minute extract from Être et avoir (timings on sheet) and 4 minute extract from La chorale. The students attempt to answer as many questions as possible. They won't necessarily all find answers to all of the questions but I have enjoyed listening to the students' interpretations of the extracts they have watched. A great way to introduce a debate about education! Instructions: Réponds oui, non, je ne sais pas. Extra : Justifie tes réponses. Example questions: 1. Est-ce qu’il donne du plaisir à apprendre ? 2. Est-ce qu’il rend les gens heureux ? 3. Est-ce qu’il développe l’esprit critique des élèves ? 4. Est-ce qu’il aime les élèves ? 5. Est-ce qu’il a de l’autorité ? 6. Est-ce qu’il respecte ses élèves ? 7. Est-ce qu’il suscite l’intérêt de ceux qui l’écoutent ?

I noticed that some of my GCSE students weren't spotting the synonyms that would help them to answer their Listening and Reading Exam questions and made these cards. The students have to group the cards together sometimes in pairs, others in groups of 3 or more. Expressions: Les voitures Les véhicules Les autos Les déchets Les papiers Les ordures Les détritus La capitale française Paris Beaucoup de gens Beaucoup de personnes Beaucoup de monde Travail Emploi Métier Carrière (technically not a synonym of the previous 2, but links to the topic). Je garde les enfants Je fais du baby-sitting Conduire Rouler Réduire Diminuer La flore L’herbe Des plantes Les arbres et les fleurs La faune Les animaux En fin de semaine Le week-end Se reposer Se détendre Se relaxer Le transport en commun Le réseau de bus urbain Les jeunes Les adolescents Following checking there is afun games to play which I learnt in Japan called Karuta. In Karuta the students spread out the cards in front of them. I then say the English and the students compete to touch the correct French cards first. Whoever touches it first wins the card. The student with the most cards at the end of the game wins. The students love this game!

French Teaching Resources: Pronunciation Sheet.

(0)
This simple sheet helps students to practise their pronunciation. Information included: French pronunciation! In French, many words are not pronounced as we would expect! Here are a few rules to help: • The letters “t” and “s” are not pronounced (are silent) if they are at the end of the word. e.g. français, chat. • The letter “h” is also silent e.g. hôtel, hôpital. • The letters “th” are pronounced “t” e.g. théâtre, thé. • If the letter “c” has a cedilla attached it is pronounced like the letter “s” e.g çava. • The letters “se” at the end of a word are pronounced “z” e.g. française. • the letters “ent” at the end of a word are not pronounced e.g. ils jouent. I first write up the words on the board and ask the students to discuss the pronunciation. Then I talk the students through the sheet and drill them. Finally I test the student's knowledge with a game of noughts and crosses in teams. I draw the grid in the board and give each square a number. Then a student chooses a square for their team and I write one of the words in the square. To win the square they must pronounce the word correctly. If they get it wrong the other team can steal the square if they pronounce the word correctly. The students love this game!

I use this either as a fun short warmer activity or to revise some items of clothing and sports as well as other general vocabulary. It is based on the Soccamatic from Wallace and Gromit's Cracking Contraptions on the Extras DVD of The Curse of The Were Rabbit. We translate the questions, then watch the Soccamatic twice (it only lasts 1.5 minutes) and check the answers. The worksheet is differentiated with Extra questions to stretch the stronger students. Worksheet Extracts: Wallace et Gromit! Cracking Contraptions! A. Vrai ou faux? Extract: 1. Gromit porte un pull vert. 2. Wallace et Gromit jouent au badminton. 3. Wallace porte un short violet. These French cards present weather conditions in the present, imperfect and future tenses. Expressions: Il faisait beau. Il pleuvait. Il neigeait. Il y avait des nuages. Il y avait des orages. Il faisait du brouillard. Il faisait du vent. Il fait beau. Il pleut. Il neige Il y a des nuages. Il y a des orages. Il fait du brouillard. Il fait du vent. Il fera beau. Il pleuvra. Il neigera. Il y aura des nuages. Il fera du brouillard. Il fera du vent. Il y aura des orages. You may choose to have different levels of challenge. For example, Level 1 = put the cards into 3 columns: imperfect, present and future and discuss the pronunciation. Level 2 = As Level 1 and then have quick fire questions from French to English, whereby 1 student closes their eyes and their partner reads out the French cards which the student must translate into English from memory. Level 3 = As Level 2 but the quick fire questions are from English to French. Following checking there are 2 fun games to play, either pelmenism or slap the card. Battleships: Expressions: Dans le nord il sera ensoleillé Dans le sud il sera nuageux Dans l’est il y a un fort risque de pluie Dans l’ouest il y aura des averses Dans le centre il y aura des orages et en Bretagne il y aura des éclaircies. et en Normandie il y aura du brouillard. et sur l’île de France il y aura du vent. et à Paris il neigera. et à Nice il fera beau. et à Bordeaux les températures seront en baisse. Firstly I ask the students to work independently in pairs to translate the expressions and discuss pronunciation. I then check the translations and drill pronunciation with the whole class before they play the game. The students secretly choose 5 squares on the top grid and then try to guess which 5 squares their partner has chosen, filling in the bottom grid with “hit” and “miss.” To choose a square say a phrase from the horizontal line and complete the sentence with a phrase from the vertical line. Where the 2 phrases meet up is the square you have chosen. I use the English language sheet to further challenge the students: they should place this on top of the French version and then try to play the game saying the French phrases as far as possible from memory.
