English Lateral Thinking Problems. Find the 'Missing Link'

This is a fun end of the day activity which can be used for a whole class. The idea is that the children are given the two end words and have to work out which middle (or link) word connects both words to create a new word or phrase. For example: Cauliflower ? Ache ‘Cauliflower blank, blank ache?’ Which word goes in between ‘cauliflower’ and ‘ache’ to make two separate phrases? Solution: Cauliflower Ear Ache This activity encourages the children to think laterally and to draw on their general knowledge to solve the problems. To help you these clues have been written in alphabetical order. These problems are an ideal end of the day activity and can be written on the board or simply read out. For younger children or those that are stuck, try putting the first letter of the link word in to help them. This resource contains over 300 different problems. Some will make even the brightest children think

Narrative story start activity - Choose the correct genre

These two worksheets contain 11 imaginiatively written different story starts. Each of these story starts is based around a different narrative genre. The worksheet asks the children to choose the correct genre and then to highlight evidence for their choice. This resource has been updated and was downloaded over 1400 times as a free resource. It is a 'ready-to-go' and just needs downloading and printing for the children to use as a worksheet. Alternatively you could use these 11 story starts as stimulus for writing...these are great to get children thinking in a particular narrative genre. I have used this resource a lot over the years with years 3-6.
