These are crucial cues that assist readers in making inferences and comprehending the author’s purpose. Students should be aware of this type of language. This figurative language study provides an abundance of figurative language examples from the novel, Zane and the Hurricane, by Rodman Philbrick, that students can analyze. This resource includes the following: Figurative Language Posters (definition, why authors use it, examples, & non-examples) Includes: Simile, Hyperbole, Personification, Metaphor, Idiom How Do You Figure? - Figurative Language Practice Sheets: Students read short passages from the novel that contain figurative language. Then, underline the figurative language used, determine the meaning, and explain why the author included it. Finding Figurative Language Charts: As students read the novel, they fill out the chart with examples of figurative language they come across while reading. Students should provide the quote from the text, page numbers, type of figurative language used, meaning, and why the author included it. The figurative language chart is not specific to this particular novel and can be used with any text. ANSWER KEYS - How Do You Figure? This print and go resource is the perfect addition to a novel study on, Zane and the Hurricane, by Rodman Philbrick. This resource includes student handouts for 4 different themes from the novel. Each handout includes a brief description of the theme and explains how the theme connects to the novel. Questions are also included to help guide students in analyzing their theme. Students will answer theme-related questions using themes present in the novel, Zane and the Hurricane. This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group work on a different theme. Some themes are more difficult, be sure to preview the questions to differentiate for your students. This Theme Study resource focuses on the following 4 themes: Family Survival Hope Inequality & Injustices There are several ways to implement this theme study. For example, students can work in groups and each group is assigned a different theme to analyze. Or, the teacher can assign students different themes to analyze independently. Then, have students group up with others who focused on the same theme (think jigsaw puzzle). The Zane and the Hurricane Theme Study provides you the flexibility to allow students to work individually, with a partner, or in a group. For each of the four themes, this product includes a handout with a brief description of the theme, how the theme connects to the novel, and questions related to the theme.
