A lesson on the regeneration of Nine Elms in London. The lesson looks at the project, the largest in London’s history, and gets the pupils to evaluate its impacts with a 20 mark essay question. Includes links to videos, newspaper articles, photographs and demographic information to enable students to contrast change over time. Made for the AQA Changing places spec but could be used with other exam boards or adapted for GCSE.

A fully resourced and up to date lesson on food inequality and insecurity around the world. Tasks include: A map analysis exercise getting pupils to identify patterns in global hunger and obesity. A marketplace activity which uses adapted newspaper articles on countries currently experiencing food insecurity from a variety of global regions and of varying levels of wealth. Most articles are from March- April 2021 with one a little older from 2019 so all currently relevant and draw upon a range of factors from climate change and conflict to the COVID 19 pandemic. Countries included are- Yemen, Nigeria, Canada, Chad and the UK. A table for pupils to take notes on each of the countries is also included, as is an example of a completed one. A short quiz to test pupils at the end and a plenary.

A lesson which assigns students the role of urban planners and tasks them with designing a sustainable city. The task is fully scaffolded as students work through a planning booklet , filling it out based on structured class discussions of the different features needed- energy, waste management, nature, food, housing, infrastructure etc. Lots of ideas are included in the notes section of the PPT slides to steer the pupils ideas. Loads of pictures and real world examples too. A design brief outlining what students need to include in their cities is also included, as is a peer assessment sheet

Complete data collection work booklet for students with 4 data collection methods: Pedestrian counts EQIs Questionnaires Land use surveys Includes background information on Brighton and map of sites visited- Sydney Street, Royal Pavilion Gardens, Pier, i360 and Clock tower. Staff book includes detailed itinerary, space for student details which can be edited to fit, train times (from Purley- this can be edited to suit), detailed maps and routes and information on each site. Can easily be followed by non-specialists and is an easy day trip to run from London with costings working out at £6.50 per student. This included train tickets and entrance to the pier. The entrance fee is only 50p per person if you contact them ahead of time and make a group booking! Used with year 7 but could be edited to suit GCSE specifications.
