Redox lesson plan and activities A2 OCR A Chem

(13)
This is a lesson on redox for OCR A chemistry F325 module 2. The main skill developed is writing and balancing half equations. The lesson that follows is on cells and uses half equations. Slide 9 is a tarsia that is printed and cut out. The youtube clip is a 3 minute periodic table timer for the starter activity. The practical is OCR A practical 23 on redox reactions. Plenarising is thorugh mini whiteboards for equations and scores on tarsia and plenary exam q. This observed lesson was a 2 but has potential to be a 1 if there is sufficient student engagement. Redox definitions tarsia puzzle

(1)
This powerpoint contains a starter, learning objectives and definitions match up puzzle for an A2 chemistry lesson on redox. This can be taught before half cells and electrode potentials. Slide 8 is the tarsia that can be modified. Slide 9 is the slide to be printed and cut out (possibly laminated). Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Revision aids for science 1 - Mnemonics

(1)
I am putting together a series of science revision resources designed to improve success in science exams. This resource includes mnemonics for cell cycle, cis-trans isomers, enthalpy, food tests (buret etc) and protein structure. I will provide a student-friendly powerpoint for later in the year. Feedback to my TES inbox please. Let me know mnemonics that you would like to be included and I will add these to my list. The YouTube videos link to nemonic songs. I adapt the YouTube reactivity series nemonic to get more able students to include metals such as Tin and Platinum.

Combined NMR IR Mass spec analysis A2 chemistry

(7)
This is a lesson plan and activities for using combined analytical techniques - NMR (proton and carbon), mass spec and infra red spec. Differentiated LO are provided and 3 unknown compounds are analysed (salicyclic acid, ethyl butanoate and aspirin). There is a group task that makes this a student led independent learning lesson where what matters is the justified analysis using annotated evidence rather than the correct answer. Progress check sheet for students - A level

Progress check sheet for students - A level

(1)
This document helps students and teachers track progress in A level chemistry (OCR A specification). It can easily be modified for any exam board or subject and would work well at KS4. Students record their progress on assessed homework and tests. There is space for teacher and student feedback. The 'medal&' and &';mission' comments are completed by the teacher. There is space to record intervention strategies for a particular module. For homework a percentage correct score is worked out and a grade given as follows: 60% = C, 70% = B, 80% = A. Designing cars for the future level assessed task

Designing cars for the future level assessed task

(3)
This is a how science works level assessed task aimed at levels KS3 levels 3 to 7. This assesses the learning of global warming and renewable resources by getting students to design a car for the future that reduces carbon dioxide emissions. I use this as part of a year 8 scheme of work. The word document can be used to edit the LAT and then save it as a JPEG file that is pasted into PowerPoint. The PowerPoint is the A4 document that is printed for students. The video shows a very cool solar road car driving at 10% max speed for testing. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

This is a who wants to be a millionaire quiz designed for mixed ability year 8 students. Questions cover displacement reactions, reactivity series, salts, acid rain. Feedback to my TES inbox please. The template is based on a template designed by Terri Street.
Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

(0)
I have created a laminated chemicals, elements and compounds cardsort that is colour coded and kept in A4 plastic wallets. Red = acid, blue = alkali / CO2 / water, grey = metals, non-metals = elemental colours where possible. I make 6 lots of these so that I have one set per table. They can be used to: (1) make word equations (and by extension symbol equations), (2) sort metals from non-metals, (3) sort acids from bases (4) sort elemental metals from alloys. Many other uses also. Feedback to my TES inbox please.
Debating strategies for the classroom

Debating strategies for the classroom

(11)
Debating and critical thinking skills are an absolutely essential component of scientific thinking. I have provided a range of resources to promote debating skills: a lesson plan where students consider the disadvantages of cars and create their own solutions, debating strategies ideas and student instructions that can easily be adopted into a wide variety of lessons across different subjects. Feedback to my TES inbox please. Thank you.
Peer editing templates useful for building on AFL

Peer editing templates useful for building on AFL

(3)
Templates are provided that can be readily modified. One template is a GCSE revision template where students are guided to create their own exam questions and peer edit answers. The second template is useful for writing Blooms-leveled answers at Key Stage 3 and includes a wordbank. The third is an AS Chemistry exam question with keyword glossary. All templates include written instructions for students. Peer editing is great when combined with AFL strategies before and after the activity.

Crystallisation practical lesson plan using salol

(3)
This is a lesson plan that has been designed and taught to year 8 students. It is taught early in the rock cycle scheme of work and uses salol. Glass rods are dipped in the salol and drops are put on warm, room temperature and cooled (in freezer) glass slides. Crystal size is measured and compared. This model is used to make anologies with rock cooling in the real world. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Presentation skills 3 lessons easily adaptable

(3)
This is a lesson sequence designed to be flexible to suit any keystage, subject or SoW. Peer assessment can be carried out using my peer assessment pro-forma that is in my resources. It could potentially form the basis of an outstanding lesson. Please provide feedback to: rowan.savage@hotmail.com. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.
