Creative Writing: The Titanic
I created these resources whilst on a second school placement during my GTP. The aim was to get a year 9 group to write creatively but familiarize them with GCSE marking criteria (Welsh Board). The information surrounding the Titanic was to provide a stimulus for them to write their own story.
Title, Blurb and brief description
A starter activity to get students involved in different types of fiction. You will need to cut out each of the constituent parts, but this is a great starter activity with the kids working together to match them up.
Twelfth Night: Interpreting Characters Powerpoint
A complete powerpoint lesson exploring the way in which students can interpret the characterisation evident in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare.
Poetry: Cultural Poetry Investigation PART 1
The first part of a poetic investigation using all those old copies of the AQA anthology from yesteryear. The assessment is designed to focuse on RAF2,3,5 and 7. Each poem is split into two lessons; the first focusing on the cultural aspects and the second on the language. ALL of these power points are rendered in pink to allow Dyslexic students to read them without the text glaring. Second part to follow....
GCSE Literature: Character and Voice
I shall add to this as i create my power points. They will all follow the AQA Working with the Anthology Achieve a C textbook. Hope they prove useful to some.
DAZ 4 ZOE Assessment Pack
Shows lessons building up to a reading assessment looking at RAF 2,3,4 and 5. These lessons are targeted at a top set Year 8 class with levels ranging from 5 - 7.
D6 Dungeons and Dragons: Creative Writing tool kit - let your students' imagination run wild!
I am vexed (greatly vexed) at the generally poor quality of creative writing with students these days - they do tend to have a lot of their thinking done for them. Sadly, it seems to be something that is leeched out of them by a combination of an aggressive curriculum and teenage priorities. So, this is my answer - DUNGEONS and DRAGONS (Or D6 Dungeons and Dragons as I am now calling it).
Simply put, it's a very simplified version of the original Dungeon's and Dragons - you need only a D6 (One dice), pens, paper and this power point to play.
Try it out - I had some huge success with year 8, 9 and 11 classes instead of playing DVDs in the build up to the Christmas Break - it would work just as well for Easter, Summer and stand alone lessons where you have an awkward space to fill.
Use this lesson when you are trying to answer this question - how can I teach kids to be more creative?
There is some initial effort required on your part though - you will have to be the Dungeon Master in the example - but once you've got past this part, I am willing to bet you could leave the room and the kids won't have noticed.
Additionally, I will be creating a series of themed "mission packs" for Christmas, Easter and Summer - you'll have to buy these (they take a while to make), but the start point is yours for free!!!

Lord of the Flies: Stage 1 - Reading (M - H)
Here you will find the reading lessons for my Lord of the Flies SoW for the mid to higher ability (Learning outcomes measured against Levels 4 - 6).
IMPORTANT: Lessons 6 and 7 use sound-clips which I couldn't upload - you will have to find suitable sound effects yourself.
Please feel free to add feedback and any suggestions.
Renaissance Poem, Play & Prose: Worksheets
A set of worksheets including comprehension questions and synopsis summaries of a play, prose and a poem. Each sheet has comprehension questions that lead the A level students towards understanding.
Still trying to get my head around this course so feedback would be appreciated as to how useful these resources are.
English Language Materials (Old Spec)
These are the resources I created for teaching AS English Language - I am certain now that the spec has changed but the skills and powerpoints may be a start point for some. Hope someone out there finds these useful...
Spoken Language structured response worksheets
Using the PEE format I've made user friendly sheets specifically relating to Spoken Language to help students plan and structure their responses. These are useful if the students are familiar with the terminology first.
Lord of the Flies: Stage Zero - Starting Point
The first lesson of a SoW I have recently created to teach Lord of the Flies to Year 7. This is the first part; I refer you to the 'Following this Scheme' guide for instructions as to what to do next.
Please leave feedback if you find this Scheme useful or have any suggestions to make. Look for the remaining stages on here too...
First Day Feelings
Linked to the Roald Dahl 'Boy' SoW. I used these powerpoints and worksheets to differentiate for a very large middle set year 7 group. Reasonable success - the worksheets allows the top end to focus on their own development, leaving me to focus on those who were really struggling.
Poetry: Cultural Poetry Investigation PART 2
....and here it is. The second part of a KS3 investigation into poetry. It should be noted that I have targetted these lessons specifically at LOWER ABILITY year 7's - this unit is designed to be a little harder.
It should be noted at this point that these resources were created in conjunction with a team of people - i do not take credit for ANY of the word documents in BOTH resources.
Midsummers Nights Dream S&L Resource Kit
I did this as an end of year task with my Year 7's. Essentially it is putting on a puppet show of Pyramus and Thisbe, the idea being that the students tell a modern version but using elements of Shakespearean language. Set up for SLAF 3 but easy enough to alter for SLAF 1 and 2.
Neo-Classical prose, poem and play
A worksheet on a poem, play and piece of prose from the Neo-Classical era. The questions are to check understanding and encourage thoughtful study of the era.
I would appreciate feedback.
KS4: Shakespeare and Conflict Poems: CONFLICT
Focused on the Shakespearean text vs the Conflict Poetry from the literary heritage. Very structured against the bands and pointed towards the controlled assessment.
Lord of the Flies: Stage Two - Film
These lessons are to be ran in tandem with watching the 1963 versions of the film (not the modern version - the pilot is still alive!). You can insert these two lessons at any point in the SoW.
Lord of the Flies: Stage Three - Writing
The third and final stage of my Lord of the Flies SoW. I am still adding in alternative lessons to this so expect some changes. The writing assessment focuses on a letter-in-a-bottle activity. As you can see, there is heavy emphasis on punctuation.
Feedback welcome.
The handwriting lesson is based upon a workbook i found on TES - I take no credit for it!
KS4 - Shakespeare and Conflict Poetry - FEELINGS
A series of lessons designed to teach Year 10-11 students about Shakespeare and how he presents feelings. This unit is pointed at a controlled assessment question that focuses on how Shakespeare and the conflict poetry POETS present ideas about feelings - poetry lessons to follow.
