Rotational Symmetry Art Activity. This fun activity produces fantastic designs that your students will be super proud of. Each template has rotational symmetry of order 6 and is on isometric dot paper. Your students simply add more lines (ensuring each line is done 6 times to keep it symmetrical), using the dots to maintain accuracy. When your students are happy with their final design they can colour it in using symmetrical colouring. Afterwards, your students may wish to cut their design out and use it in another piece of artwork. For example, adding a stem and leaves to turn it into a flower. Plain isometric dot paper has also been provided as a basis for your students to create their own rotational symmetry design from scratch. New Zealand Essential Spelling Lists 1-7 (+ commonly misspelt words). A fun board game to help your students learn their spelling words. The variety of boards will give them a sense of choice and will help to keep them motivated to play. The cute graphics are bound to appeal to both you and your students. If you spell the word correctly, you receive one point. The winner is the player who reaches a predetermined number (eg 20 points), or whoever has the most points after an allocated time. Your students can play this game with anyone! Players do not need to be playing against others on the same word list. Great for daily 5, literacy centres, word study, early finishers, wet day games, etc. This game can easily be adapted to any spelling words. An effective activity for your students when you are setting up your classroom culture at the beginning of the year. Something a little different to the standard ‘classroom rules’ discussions. The activity focuses on 4 RIGHTS that your students have at school: ♦ We have the right to learn at school. ♦ We have the right to use school property. ♦ We have the right to be safe at school (physical wellbeing). ♦ We have the right to feel happy at school (emotional wellbeing). Students brainstorm their responsibilities as a class and write them in the individual honeycomb cell templates. These cells are then cut out and arranged around the ‘rights’ templates. You can add as many honeycomb cells as you wish. Blank cells can be included to fill sections if necessary. This makes an effective wall display that can be referred to (and added to) throughout the year. Examples of responsibilities: ♦ We have the right to learn at school – ask for help when I need it. ♦ We have the right to use school property - put equipment away when I have finished with it. ♦ We have the right to be safe at school – don’t throw things in the classroom. ♦ We have the right to feel happy at school - share things with others. A fabulous resource to have in New Zealand classrooms when studying Māori Myths and Legends. Great for a follow-up activity after reading the story, or to have as an early-finisher task. 12 word searches. Eleven of the word searches have a Māori themed border or panel that can be coloured after finding all of the words. One word search has a flame/fire themed border (How Maui Found the Secret of Fire). These word searches are designed to go with the fabulous stories written by Peter Gossage. These books are commonly found in NZ schools and are also easily available for purchase in book stores. If you are not sure what these books look like, I suggest you do a quick image search on the internet (I'm not able to include an image here due to copyright restrictions). Sheriff Chompalot has arrested you for littering in the ocean! To gain your freedom from the ‘Ocean Jail’, you must decipher some texts about ocean creatures. These texts are written in ‘shark tooth’ code (commonly known as ‘pig pen’ code). Will you be able to gain your key to freedom or will you remain in prison forever? Are you looking for a great activity for teaching your students some knowledge about Matariki (the Māori New Year)? This is an engaging activity that will look great in your classroom. Your students will colour/decorate a star template (2x A4 size pages) and then cut and glue it to reveal a fact about Matariki behind the ‘flaps’. There are 30 different facts which will hopefully allow a different fact for each student in your class. After constructing the stars, your students can orally share their fact with the class to help build knowledge about Matariki. The stars can be pinned to the wall or you can hang them to create a fabulous galaxy! Some precision is required with cutting and gluing. If you have younger students, you may like to buddy them up with an older class (great for fostering the tuakana-teina relationship).
