Job overview

For January 2025, we are seeking an exceptional addition to our Senior Leadership Team. DCGS is one of the country’s leading state grammar schools, educating 1370 students (boys from 11-16 with a co-educational Sixth Form). The successful candidate will lead the learning provision in our school, as we build on recent excellent practice and continue to innovate. They will also play a key role in the day-to-day leadership and management of the school.

Additionally, we would be particularly interested to receive applications from people with DSL qualifications and experience who would be interested in taking on that role here, along with some of the responsibilities outlined in this pack. For such candidates the precise scope of the role would be determined upon appointment, to suit both the school and the individual.

Our culture, and everything we do, is underpinned by our values of Aspiration, Kindness and Resilience. These values guide our actions and help us bring our motto, Excellence with Integrity, to life. We would like to appoint someone who embodies those values in the way they work with young people to lead our learning provision.

The successful candidate will lead the development and evaluation of our learning and teaching, ensuring that we draw on the best available evidence and practice. They will also oversee elements of our professional development programme, focusing on learning and teaching, and our ITT and ECF provision. Line management of one of our subject teams will ensure close links with what goes on in our classrooms. Further responsibilities will be allocated on appointment, based on the successful candidate’s interests and experiences. Whilst subject specialism is not especially important in this appointment, the ability to teach one of the subjects we offer at A level is an advantage.

To fill this rewarding and demanding role, we are seeking someone who has genuine creativity but who also possesses the highest level of organisational capacity; an excellent communicator who can shape ideas and see them through so that they make a real difference to what happens on the ground. Further detail is contained within the Person Specification which is included in the Information Pack. The type of school you have worked in before is very unlikely to be a factor, although members of our SLT have to be able to hold their own with our highly intelligent students, parents and colleagues.

To apply for this role, please email a completed application form to Gill Byrne (HR Manager and Head’s PA). Email: employment@challoners.com

Closing date: Noon on Wednesday 2 October 2024.

Interviews: Monday 14/Tuesday 15 October 2024.

At Dr Challoner's Grammar School we ensure breadth of opportunities for all and actively promote open and outward-facing attitudes to diversity and inclusion. As such, we actively encourage suitably qualified people from all backgrounds to apply for roles at our school. If there are any issues which you feel could be barriers to your application, as part of this process, please let us know.

Dr Challoner’s Grammar School is committed to safeguarding and successful candidates will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check.

Founded in 1624, Dr Challoner’s Grammar School is an academy grammar school based in Amersham, with 1370 students (of whom 450 are in the co-educational Sixth Form). We have around 160 teaching and support staff and draw our intake of 180 boys who join the school in Year 7 from the Chiltern area of Buckinghamshire. Boys take the Buckinghamshire Transfer Test.

Challoner’s was the third secondary school in the country to be judged Outstanding under Ofsted’s new Education Inspection Framework when inspected in November 2019, with the inspectors noting that the school has a culture of teamwork, loyalty and aspiration, and that staff feel exceptionally well supported.

We are proud to be the Teaching School Hub for Buckinghamshire, a function we fulfil through the Astra Teaching School Hub. Astra's status as a School Centred Initial Teacher Training provider (SCITT), training over 50 teachers each year, also ensures Challoner’s is at the cutting edge of curricular and pedagogical developments in education.

Our ethos is ‘Excellence with integrity’, underpinned by our core values of:

- Aspiration;

- Kindness;

- Resilience;

equipping our students to flourish in the future, whatever that may hold. We are committed to our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Charter, by which we strive to create a safe environment for everyone, where kindness, respect and equity are visible characteristics amongst all members of the school community.

We believe that the learning habits developed by students are just as important as the knowledge and understanding they acquire during their time at school. An enthusiasm for learning permeates the school and drives a common desire to excel that is shared by students, staff and governors. DCGS is an active member of a number of organisations including the Association for Character Education and the International Boys Schools Coalition. We have hosted national conferences on learning as well as supporting many local schools. Professional development is given a high priority.

Staff often remark that Challoner’s is a great place to work. Recent feedback from staff includes:

- People really value each other

- There’s a great sense of community

- There’s always someone here to make you smile

- DCGS has allowed me to learn and develop so much

You’ll find a lot more information about the school on our website www.challoners.com (which we hope encapsulates that intangible ‘feel’ of the school), and about the Astra Teaching School Hub at www.astrahub.org. If you would like to know more, please feel free to contact us by phone or email.
