Job overview

I am delighted that you have expressed an interest in the role of Assistant Principal at St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy.

St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy is an oversubscribed 11-18 co-educational academy offering a first-class education underpinned by Christian values, where the students are placed at the heart of our decision making, so that they can flourish and reach their full potential. With 1519 students on roll and drawing students from 52 feeder primary schools, the Academy has worked hard to be the first choice school for families seeking a Christian faith-led education in this area.

Following the promotion of the postholder, we are looking for a very special individual to lead our Key Stage 3 pastoral team. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in the pastoral and student support areas of school life and a track record of improving outcomes in their current role.

The Academy is located within the 29th most deprived neighbourhood in England and is multi -racial and multi-cultural. We have a firm commitment to improving the life chances of all of our students, are consistently high-performing and have a local reputation for excellence.

St Wilfrid’s enjoys a hard-earned reputation as an outward looking, forward thinking Academy where staff development, through well planned CPD and the Academy-wide use of effective technology, has contributed to securing excellent outcomes for our students.

If you were to be appointed you would be working alongside a team of highly-skilled staff and leading a large team in our Key Stage 3 ‘POD’. All in all, it is a wonderful place to work, learn and worship. Our vision is ‘Lord Direct us to LIVE Life to the Full’, rooted in John 10:10. Whilst Learning we are Inspired and develop our Values through Experiences as each member flourishes. We aim to raise aspirations, realise potential and develop well rounded successful teachers and young people.

The successful postholder can expect to teach up to 12 hours per week. We welcome applicants with any subject background.

Prospective candidates are warmly invited to visit the Academy ahead of applying; the staff and students embody our Christian ethos and values in their daily interactions and it is believed you will experience that ‘something special’ feeling visitors so frequently articulate.

If you wish to make an appointment to look around the Academy, please contact the PA to the Principal, Mrs K Nightingale via email at KNightingale@saintwilfrids.com or by phone on 01254 604000.

The closing date for applications is 9:00am on Monday 30th September 2024.

Please submit an application form, which can be downloaded from the Academy website, along with a letter of application of not more than four A4 sides detailing how your experiences to date qualify you for the post to Mrs K Nightingale via email KNightingale@saintwilfrids.com.

I look forward to receiving your application.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs V Michael

Principal

About St Wilfrid's Church of England Academy

ABOUT ST WILFRID'S C OF E ACADEMY

St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy provides a faith-led education for 11 to 18 year olds serving the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen and parts of Pennine Lancashire. We seek to provide an excellent education based upon a strong Christian foundation, as we develop all who work, learn and serve in our community. We benefit from purpose-built accommodation with excellent facilities. All in all, it is a wonderful place to work and learn. Visitors to St Wilfrid’s comment on the calm and purposeful environment, the friendly nature of our students and the welcoming nature of our staff.

We have a reputation for high academic standards. As a comprehensive school, we pride ourselves on providing teaching and learning which engages all students. The recent SIAMS inspector stated:

“Almost everyone describes the academy as being ‘one big family’ where all care for and help one another. This is understood to be the outworking of Christian values and teachings which underpin excellent behaviour and relationships. Students recognise in teachers a commitment to serve which for many is an aspect of their Christian faith. This prompts them to strive to provide the best and most supportive opportunities for all students. The result is exemplary academic and pastoral support which enables students to make good progress, attain excellent results and develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC 2016).”

MISSION STATEMENT

“St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy sees education as an integral  part of the mission of the Church to proclaim God as Creator, Christ as Redeemer and the Holy Spirit as Inspirer of all that is good in human living.  The main purpose of the school is to provide an excellent education, both academic and social, in a Christian context, to enable its students to grow up to take their full part as citizens of this world and the next.”
