Job overview

Founded in 1865, Malvern College is one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent boarding and day schools for pupils aged 13-18. With a 159-year history, Malvern College is rooted by its heritage and propelled by the curious young minds of the pupils who form the life blood of this globally minded, diverse and inclusive community. On a beautiful 250 acre campus surrounded by the Malvern Hills, Malvern College fosters a long-established commitment to internationalism and a belief in the strengths of a multi-cultural, multi-national community.

Whilst Malvern College is an historic school, it is also continuously evolving. It became fully co-educational in 1992 when three successful schools were brought together and in 2008, Malvern College Preparatory School was amalgamated with The Downs School to form The Downs Malvern, located on the magnificent site in Colwall. Malvern College’s six overseas sister schools are spread across mainland China, Cairo, Egypt, Tokyo, Japan, and Hong Kong, and have added a crucial global element to the Malvern College Family of Schools. Malvern College is also committed to access and outreach and enjoys well-developed partnerships with local and international schools and institutions.

Malvern College has been the birthplace of trailblazers, innovators, and explorers, who undeniably evoke the spirit of adventure. Central to this ethos is not only cultivating pupils as “global citizens” but also fostering an understanding and practice of Cultural Awareness (CQ) in conjunction with Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Intelligence Quotient (IQ).

Malvern College is seeking an exceptional person with a genuine passion for and commitment to the College as Chair, to succeed Robin Black, who will retire from the Council in December 2025. The next Chair will share Malvern’s ambitions for continued growth and development in the UK, as well as overseas, and will be highly strategic, decisive, flexible and energetic. The Chair must be attuned to the political and financial challenges facing great schools and be ready to defend the College when challenged, as well as work with the Council and Leadership Team to find strategic solutions.

The next Chair should bring a track record of success in their chosen field, with senior level commercial experience (ideally gained in a multinational context), with demonstrable high-level financial and business acumen.

It is of paramount importance that they understand and feel strongly aligned to Malvern’s vision and purpose and willingly and convincingly live the Malvern Qualities. We are keen to hear from those with a connection to the College, but warmly welcome applicants without any connection, too.

Applications should comprise full curriculum vitae and a covering letter addressing the criteria presented in the role description and person specification. Completed applications should be uploaded at https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies quoting reference 7295. The deadline for applications is 08:30am BST on Monday 16 September 2024.
