Job overview

Welcome to Urmston Grammar School. We are incredibly proud of our school, which has amazing students and skilful, dedicated, passionate teachers and support staff. Our school has a history spanning over 100 years, but 2025 will be a year of exciting changes. Our longstanding Headteacher, Mrs Wall, is retiring at the end of this academic year and our current Co-Headteacher, Mr Kennedy-Fowler, has been successfully appointed as the new Headteacher from September 2025. This has resulted in the need to recruit an inspiring, innovative and dedicated Deputy Headteacher to join our Senior Leadership Team. The successful candidate will become a key driving force in providing a fantastic education for every student and securing the ongoing success of our school.

We are committed to cultivating an environment of academic excellence, innovation, and inclusivity where every student can thrive. As a high-achieving, selective academy, we inspire curiosity and resilience, equipping our students with the skills and values needed to excel in an evolving world. Our diverse and vibrant community upholds a proud tradition of success while embracing a forward-thinking approach to education, personal development, and well-being.

We seek a visionary and progressive leader who will champion our ethos, further our achievements, and empower our students and staff to reach new academic and personal development heights. With a dedicated faculty, ambitious learners, and an engaged community, Urmston Grammar stands as a beacon of opportunity and aspiration. Join us in shaping the future and building on a legacy of distinction.

The Deputy Headteacher role at Urmston Grammar is an extremely exciting opportunity, and the successful candidate will be well-versed in utilising innovative approaches to improve high academic standards whilst maintaining the tradition, community and structure of the school. They will be able to work well with staff, students and all stakeholders and build partnerships to ensure the school’s continued success.

This summer, we saw outstanding results in our GCSEs and continue to perform well above the national average in A levels. The governing board work collaboratively with Senior Leaders and take pride in seeing our students become rounded, thoughtful, enthusiastic individuals ready to face the world beyond. This is the result of our unique curriculum, a rich variety of extracurricular activities and a focus on nurturing the best individual performances at all times.

The successful candidate will take up the post at the start of the new academic year in September 2025.

Closing date for applications: Tuesday 4th February 2025

Vision and values

Urmston Grammar celebrates the pursuit of excellence and encourages each individual to achieve their personal best. We provide students with an education that is built on a tradition of courtesy and mutual respect, hence our motto, 'manners makyth man'. Teaching and facilities ensure that students receive an education that prepares them for successful, fulfilled lives in this demanding twenty-first century. The school building has retained much of the original structure that works well to serve our needs, however newer areas incorporate elements of modern design. These fit together seamlessly to provide an excellent working environment. This reflects our philosophy on education, which is built on strong traditions but open to new ideas and innovation.

The success of our school is not just based on the aptitude of our students, but on the expertise of our staff to nurture each individual. Students are challenged and supported to maximise their achievement. They are expected to actively participate in school life and make a valuable and sustained contribution to their wider community. This is why we want every student to take PRIDE in who they are and what they do, PARTICIPATE and make the best of the opportunities available to them, and show EMPATHY to others to ensure that we develop a community built on tolerance and respect.
