Job overview

Director of Children’s Services

£101,806 - £106,096 inclusive of DIA (distant islands allowance)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Growing up on the Shetland Islands really isn’t like anywhere else. So, it should come as no surprise that working here is just as unique an experience. It’s a place where community really matters, and where creativity and self sufficiency are essential attributes. Everyone plays their part.

We want every young person in Shetland to thrive. That means ensuring that their voice is heard and that we consider how all aspects of our work impact on our youth. It means providing a high quality and agile education service, that meets the complex challenges of dispersed communities. It means providing the right support for our more vulnerable families, with an emphasis on prevention and early intervention. It means thinking ahead: to ensure that we can create positive destinations for our young people that draws on their strong sense of connection to the islands to retain their skills and fulfil their aspirations in Shetland.

As Director of Children’s Services we’ll look to you to be a visible and influential advocate for our children and young people – working with our community partners and engaging at a national level on key issues. As part of the Council’s leadership team you’ll play an integral corporate role, ensuring a cohesive and integrated strategic approach. With responsibility for the largest cohort of staff within the Council, your remit will touch on every aspect of island life. It’s a role that offers great responsibility and immense professional reward.
