We have a wonderful culture of support and collaboration and very lovely students from all around the world. We are looking to recruit an innovative and dynamic Future Guidance Counsellor. This is a permanent, part-time (0.6 FTE) position based onsite at our Westminster campus. In this role, you will be integral to guiding students through their career decision-making process, ensuring they are well-prepared for higher education and future career pathways. Reporting directly to the Head of Future Guidance, the role involves working primarily during term time, with some involvement during school holidays to support key events.

About the role

As a Future Guidance Counsellor, you will conduct personalised career guidance interviews, providing impartial advice that helps students make informed, realistic, and adaptable career decisions. Your responsibilities include maintaining detailed student records, utilising labour market information, and organising career fairs and other relevant activities. You will also contribute to the development and delivery of the career guidance program, supporting the achievement of Gatsby Benchmarks and the Quality in Careers Standard.

You will be expected to use your expertise to interpret and provide up-to-date career information and engage in networking with external agencies to enhance our guidance program. Additionally, you will play a key role in involving parents and supporting students with specific needs by referring them to appropriate specialist services.

The school is open to considering immediate start for qualified candidates who meet the criteria. Alternatively, we will wait for the right candidate who aligns closely with our school’s ethos and vision. The priority is to find a dedicated Future Guidance Counsellor who will best serve our students and community. Southbank International School is London's leading IB world school, with over 70 nationalities, our lovely school educates 850 children from the ages of 3–18.

Who we are looking for

Ideally, you will have:

  •  Educational Background: A relevant degree in education, counselling, career guidance, or a related field is essential. Additional qualifications or certifications in counselling or career development are advantageous.
  • Experience: Prior experience in a similar role, particularly within an international school context, is highly valuable. This experience should demonstrate a strong understanding of educational pathways and career opportunities locally and globally.
  • Knowledge of International Baccalaureate: Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes is desirable as they are central to Southbank's curriculum. An ideal candidate should understand the IB's philosophy and how it prepares students for higher education.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. Engaging with students, parents, and staff effectively is key to providing guidance and support.
  • Empathy and Cultural Sensitivity: Given Southbank's diverse and inclusive community, an ideal candidate should be culturally empathetic, able to relate to students from various backgrounds and understand their unique needs and aspirations.
  • In-depth Knowledge of Future Options: A comprehensive understanding of institutions worldwide, including universities and colleges, is essential. This includes knowledge of admission requirements, scholarships, and career pathways
  • Analytical and Research Skills: The ability to research and stay updated on changing educational and career trends is crucial. The advisor should provide students with accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: The role may involve addressing students' various career-related challenges. An ideal candidate should be a skilled problem solver who can offer practical solutions and guidance.
  • Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in relevant software and online resources for future options research is important. This includes familiarity with career assessment tools and online university databases.
  • Collaborative Approach: Southbank values an open and inclusive community. The Counsellor should be collaborative and willing to work closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to support students' career development.
  • Adaptability: The field of higher education and careers is constantly evolving. An ideal candidate should be adaptable and willing to embrace new technologies and methodologies in their role.
  • Passion for Education: Lastly, a genuine passion for education and helping students achieve their academic and future options goals is fundamental. The advisor should inspire enthusiasm for learning and personal growth. Prior teaching experience is desirable.
