Job overview

Who we are

Marylebone Boys' School is a Free School Academy which opened in September 2014. We have c600 boys in Years 7-11 and c150 male and female students in our MBS Sixth Form.

We are an inner-city boys’ school with a cohort of 50% Pupil Premium students. We are an academically rigorous school with an emphasis on good behaviour, commitment to learning and outstanding teaching, where knowledge is valued and available to all who are prepared to work for it. Expectations are high for all pupils. Those who need extra time and support will be helped and expected to achieve their full potential, including our special resource provision for boys with autism. Our motto is “studio et industria”, which can be translated as “through application and hard work”.

In addition to our strong academic focus, we place great importance on personal development and supporting the ambitions of our students. The staff care passionately about the well-being of the pupils and are driven to ensure their educational experience is the best it can be. Our students are enthusiastic learners and actively engage with the extensive range of opportunities available to them.

All staff have access to an on-site gym, cycle and tech schemes, subsidised lunch, and a generous defined-contribution pensions scheme.

Safeguarding

We follow safer recruitment practices and appointments are subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and safeguarding checks as required under Keeping Children Safe in Education will be carried out.

Our English Faculty

Our English faculty is extremely successful; pupils achieve well above the national average at GSCE. We are proud of a diverse curriculum adding to this success as we expose students to a strong female protagonist in Pullman’s Ruby in the Smoke, we explore the world of colonisation in Shakespeare’s The Tempest but with a twist as we enhance our study by looking at it through the lens of Inua Ellams’ decolonisation of the play, we tour the society we live in and the world through poetry - shifting from the perspective of someone who is hearing impaired in Dear hearing world, searching for identify in Agard’s Half-caste whilst traversing to South Asia in Presents from my Aunt in Pakistan. We continue our journey into KS4 as we investigate human nature through Stevenson’s renowned Gothic novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. This is only a small snippet of how our texts reflect the city we live in and the boys within our school.

We actively promote pupils’ immersion into the literary world through exploring whole texts in the classroom such as the reading of the novel Lord of the Flies in year 8 to get the boys’ reading for pleasure, whilst also bringing the texts to life aurally as students listen to audiobooks across KS3. We further this sense of immersion and boost cultural capital by allowing students to experience a range of trips to the theatre. This year has been successful in arranging trips across KS3, KS4 and KS5 - some highlights being Shakespeare's Globe, The Phoenix Theatre and New Wimbledon Theatre. We welcome applicants who embody this spirit.

In addition, we are committed to the teaching of literacy. All pupils in KS3 have a discrete, weekly literacy lesson and follow a well-resourced curriculum which focuses on reading, whilst also acknowledging the world around them through thought provoking discussion. All literacy students read a variety of genres that are both fiction and non-fiction. All books in the literacy curriculum have been selected to ensure students are eager to read and participate in every literacy lesson. Pupils enjoy a well-stocked library and take part in a range of enrichment activities linked to reading and oracy.

Academic rigour

Marylebone Boys’ School is an academically rigorous school. We believe that knowledge and skills are available to all who are prepared to work for it. Furthermore, we believe in setting of high expectations for all students, within a framework which is tailored to meet the distinctive needs of different groups of learners.

From day one of Year 7, we believe it is essential that our boys are offered a deep grounding in core academic subjects by engaging with essential GCSE skills as well as subject specific knowledge and understanding. We believe that this acquisition of high level knowledge combined with the application of core skills is an important partnership. Every pupil will strive to achieve the EBacc qualification, and master a wide selection of academic subjects through a five year curriculum.

Furthermore, it is our core belief that the boys will be equipped with knowledge and skills that will enable them to succeed in every aspect of their life at secondary school and beyond. For us, this means delivering an academic curriculum, as well as a Period 6 enrichment programme consisting of enrichment and intervention.

Location

We are based in a new building located in the heart of the prestigious Paddington Basin area built by Westminster City Council. We are just a stone’s throw from Paddington Station with all the benefits of Crossrail as well as the existing Underground and National Rail connections.

We also have a specialist sixth form building dedicated to teaching post-16 education with brand new classrooms in close proximity on North Wharf Road.

CPD

CPD is at the heart of our vision for teaching and learning at MBS. We aim to instil love for learning and improvement in our staff as well as our students. We are constantly aiming to improve our CPD offer and tailor it to the needs of our growing community.

This year we have employed a Lead Practitioner of Teaching & Learning in order to provide meaningful support and opportunities for teachers in a developmental way. We have also opened up new avenues for leadership development opportunities so that we can build leadership capacity across the school, this includes a Leadership Development Course aimed at aspiring and current middle leaders.

Our CPD programme works in conjunction with our Quality of Education cycle, teaching and learning priorities and appraisal policy and includes; dedicated twilight sessions rooted in one of Teaching and Learning core priorities, whole school INSET days, strategy groups focusing on literacy, SEN, curriculum development and pastoral care.
